Take Charleston (-4) over Drexel (7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 5)
I am looking at a big week on the hardwood, and I am ready to hit the ground running at the start of conference play. As for this free play, I think the Cougars are going to hammer the Dragons in this spot. Charleston is, for my money, the best team in the CAA, and as such I see them being able to grind out some road wins. They are actually 3-1 straight up on the road this season, with the lone loss coming at Wichita State. Take 'Under' 5.5 Vancouver at Toronto (7 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 6)
The Toronto Maple Leafs knew coming into the season that their defense would have to be better if they wanted to advance far into the postseason. Early on in the season, their offense was still carrying the load - and in a big way. But in recent weeks, the Leafs have really started to tighten the screws defensively for head coach Mike Babcock. Their offense has suffered some as a result, but they have shown that they have the defensive prowess many questioned would never be there. On Saturday the Leafs match up against the Vancouver Canucks. The rebuilding process has begun in Vancouver, and it's going to take some time. The once-dangerous offensive weapons that were the Sedin twins have slowed down, and the team has to try and win with defense and goaltending these days. I don't expect a ton of quality scoring chances in this game, so we're playing the UNDER in our Saturday Free Play selection. Jacksonville is also 6-2 ATS in its last eight conference games and 5-2 ATS in their last seven games against a team with a winning record. The Bills might be without LeSean McCoy in this one, and their offense isn't going to be able to get it done. Buffalo has been outgained in eight of their last 10 games and three straight. This pick falls into one of my top NBA systems, and the Rockets just lost their number one player to injury. The loss of Harden on this Rockets team is absolutely huge as he has averaged 32.3 ppg this season while also logging the most minutes per game. The Warriors now have a huge advantage in this game, and they are the No. 1 scoring team in the NBA averaging 115.2 ppg this season.
