NFC East Weekly NFL Betting Picks: Week 12
by Dave Schwab - 11/20/2013
Philadelphia was finally able to snap a 10-game losing streak at home with a 24-16 victory over Washington this past Sunday as a 2.5-point favorite. The win moved the Eagles into first place in the NFC East at 6-5, but little breathing room exists at the top with Dallas coming off its bye at 5-5 and New York right behind at 4-6 after beating Green Bay 27-13 as a five-point home favorite. The Redskins’ loss dropped them to 3-7 on the year, but they are still in this title race at just 2.5 games back. I had Philadelphia as my NFC East ‘Pick of the Week’ for three units, so that means my year-to-date earnings are now $2,230 on a $100-per-unit wager behind a record of 9-2.
Each week of the season I will briefly preview all the games in the NFC East and highlight my top ‘pick of the week’ with the use of Doc’s Sports Unit Betting System. I will be tracking the results as the season progresses with the goal of ending up with at least a $1,000 profit with my picks by the end of the year. All lines quoted have been provided by 5Dimes.
San Francisco 49ers vs. Washington Redskins (Monday, Nov. 25, 8:30 p.m.)
The 49ers suddenly find themselves three games back in the NFC West title race at 6-4 straight up (7-3 against the spread) after back-to-back losses to Carolina as six-point home favorites and New Orleans as 3.5-point road underdogs. They are still ranked 12th in the NFL in scoring with 24.7 points a game, but they are ranked 29th in total yards (309.0) and dead last in passing with an average of just 168 yards a game. The defense has remained solid, and it is ranked fourth in points allowed (17.8) while holding teams to an average of 323.8 yards a total offense a game.
Washington started last season 3-6 before reeling off seven straight victories to win the NFC East at 10-6, but you get the feeling that this year’s team is headed in the opposite direction. Robert Griffin III continues to struggle with consistency throwing the ball, and the Redskins’ defense has to be considered one of the worst in the league. This unit is ranked 19th against the run and 26th against the pass while allowing an average of 389.9 total yards a game. It is giving up an average of 31.1 points a game, which is ranked 30th of 32 teams.
San Francisco is 3-2 SU in the last five meetings, and they come into this Sunday’s matchup as five-point road favorites with the total set at 47.
NFC East ‘Pick of the Week’
Dallas Cowboys vs. New York Giants (Sunday, Nov. 24, 4:25 p.m.)
When we last saw the Cowboys in action, they were getting pasted by New Orleans 49-17 as six-point road underdogs. The last time they were held to 17 points was in a Week 7 victory over Philadelphia. In their other eight games, this offense has put up an average of 30 points. The defense is ranked 25th in the NFL in points allowed and is giving up an average of 25.8 points a game, but Dallas has been torched for an average of 34.2 points in the last three games.
Eli Manning was intercepted 15 times in New York’s first six games, which all resulted in a loss. In the team’s current four-game winning streak, he has been picked off just twice. The offense as a whole has done a much better job putting points on the board during this run, and it has scored a combined 51 points in the last two games as compared to an average of just 17.6 points a game in the first eight outings.
Recent games between these two division rivals have tended to be high-scoring in nature, with the total going over in seven of the last nine meetings overall and in seven of the last 11 meetings in New Jersey. The total line for Sunday’s contest has been set at 47, which to me is a gift.
