Week 2 of the NFL season is behind us, and it is safe to say it was the underdogs' weekend, with the books cleaning up on the spread picks. The Titans covered against the Eagles, the Jets hung on until the end against Green Bay, and the Browns pulled off a massive upset on the road against the Buccaneers.

Thankfully though, teasers can help you avoid getting caught in shockers like that. Five games fit the criteria this time around for Week 3, with the majority sitting in that +1.5 to +2.5 window and a couple of favorites laying between -7.5 and -8.5. So enough side talk, let's get into it.

What is a Teaser?

Think of a teaser as buying yourself some breathing room. You are taking two or more sides and paying for the privilege of moving each spread in whichever direction helps you. The tradeoff is a smaller payout, which is fair since the books are not handing out points for free.

Where people get into trouble is treating it like a regular parlay and piling on several legs. Every team you add is another way to lose, and a teaser is still an all-or-nothing ticket.

What is a Basic Strategy Teaser?

For those that may not know, most NFL games end with a score differential of three or seven points more than anything else, with six sitting third. The entire point of a basic strategy teaser is making sure your six points pass through both of those numbers.

Here's an example. Team A is +2 on the spread. Adding six moves it to +8, so that team can lose by three, six, or seven and your ticket is still a winner. Flip it for a favorite. Team B is laying -8. Those same six points drop it to -2, meaning they only have to win by a field goal instead of more than a touchdown.

Two legs, six points apiece. Underdogs have to be at +1.5 to +2.5 so they finish at +7.5 or +8.5. Favorites have to be laying -7.5 to -8.5 so they land at -1.5 or -2.5. Make sure to check the price too, since a two-team six-pointer should sit around -110, and once you get past -120 the points cost more than they are worth.

Potential Week 3 NFL Teaser Games

Panthers (-2.5) at Browns (+2.5) Total: 42.5

Both the Panthers and Browns are coming off big wins, and with Cleveland moving up to +8.5 in front of its own crowd and the total sitting at 42.5, those six points cover most of what could go wrong here. Neither offense is reliable though, so a full touchdown of cushion matters. 

Titans (+2.5) at Giants (-2.5) Total: 39.5

Two offenses that have struggled to score now come with the lowest total on the board at 39.5. Tennessee bumping up to +8.5 against a New York team that may have just lost Jaxson Dart for the season is not a crazy thing to consider, especially after the Titans lost by just four points to the Eagles, so hanging around could be a safe bet. 

Cardinals (+8.5) at 49ers (-8.5) Total: 47.5

Most bettors have already begun to label this game as the favorite worth using this week. San Francisco drops all the way to -2.5, meaning the 49ers just need a field goal win at home to cash this bet. The 47.5 total is the highest of the group, which could be a caution flag, but getting a three-point cushion against Arizona is about as comfortable as it gets.

Vikings (-1.5) at Buccaneers (+1.5) Total: 42.5

Nobody is talking about this game much, which is usually a good sign. Tampa Bay lands at +7.5 in its own building coming off an embarrassing loss to Cleveland, and with the total sitting at 42.5, this is not shaping up as a game where anybody runs away with it. Minnesota is not built to blow teams out either, especially with Carson Wentz still under center, so a full touchdown of breathing room covers just about every scenario.

Rams (-2.5) at Broncos (+2.5) Total: 45.5

Denver at +8.5 is the last leg worth a look here. The Broncos have a tough task in front of them against a Los Angeles team that has been playing well, no argument there, but nine points is a serious head start for any NFL team. With the total sitting at 45.5, keeping this within a touchdown at home is not asking for much.
