Best NFL Teaser Bets Week 5: Basic Strategy Teasers Advice

Some weekends the NFL becomes a buffet with bettors cashing in left and right, and other weekends the gravy train runs dry, and it's been more of the latter as of late between key injuries and upsets. Jacksonville continues to stay red hot after taking down Joe Burrow and the Bengals in Cincinnati, the Falcons demolished the division-rival Saints by double digits, and Detroit got knocked off in Carolina on Sunday night as a 4.5-point favorite. Plenty of tickets that looked like sure things were all in the trash can by Monday morning.
A few extra points on the spread would have saved a lot of people last weekend, and a teaser hands bettors exactly that kind of cushion. There are six games on the Week 5 schedule that fit the criteria, and we have the best picks and the two-team combo worth your money. Let's break down the key teaser bets for Week 5.
Doc’s Sports offers NFL expert picks for every game on our NFL predictions page.
What is a Teaser?
Anyone who has played a parlay already understands half of this bet. A teaser strings together two or more games the same way a parlay does, except each spread gets moved a set number of points in the bettor's favor. The trade-off is a smaller payout, and one losing leg still sinks the entire wager placed.
What is a Basic Strategy Teaser?
Not every game qualifies for a basic strategy teaser, and the spread is what decides it. It's a two-team, six-point teaser where each spread has to pass through 3 and 7, which happen to be the most common margins in NFL final scores. If the spread doesn't pass through those numbers, it doesn't qualify.
Let's say Team A is a 1.5-point underdog against Team B. Teasing Team A six points moves it up to +7.5, so now they can lose by a field goal or even a touchdown and the leg still wins.
Flip it around and make Team B an 8.5-point favorite. Teased down to -2.5, Team B no longer has to win by more than a touchdown, since a field goal gets the job done. Underdogs need to sit between +1.5 and +2.5 and favorites between -7.5 and -8.5 to qualify.
Before placing anything, though, make sure to check the price. A two-team, six-point teaser usually runs around -110 and -120 odds, and anything steeper than -120 eats up most of the betting advantage, so shop around before pulling the trigger.
Potential Week 5 NFL Teaser Games
Buccaneers (+8.5) at Cowboys (-8.5) Total: 47.5
Four games in, Tampa Bay still hasn't won a game or covered a spread, and Baker Mayfield is out for the next few weeks. Dallas teased down to -2.5 at home could be one of the easier legs to trust this week.
Colts (+2.5) at Steelers (-2.5) Total: 44.5
After a 30-13 win over Washington in London, Indianapolis heads to Pittsburgh to face a Steelers team that lost to Cleveland on a last-second field goal. Colts +8.5 is playable, but this one could go either way, considering you never know which Steelers team you'll get on the offensive end.
Vikings (-1.5) at Saints (+1.5) Total: 42.5
The Saints took a beating Monday night when division rival Atlanta hung 45 points on them, and now a 4-0 Minnesota team comes to town. New Orleans at +7.5 could work, but this team has lost two straight home games as the favorite, and with Minnesota giving up the fifth-fewest yards per game, I'm not too quick to jump on this one.
Browns (+2.5) at Jets (-2.5) Total: 39.5
Somehow the Browns are first in the AFC North after three straight wins, while the Jets have lost three in a row and scored just 13 points against Chicago last week. A 39.5 total is about as low as it gets, and Cleveland at +8.5 should be on everybody's radar.
Texans (-7.5) at Titans (+7.5) Total: 37.5
Considering both teams have yet to win a game and have had pretty inconsistent offenses, it's no surprise this is the lowest total on the board for Week 5. Houston blew a 23-13 lead against Dallas last week, so laying even 1.5 points on the road with an 0-4 team is something I'd only consider as a backup leg.
49ers (+2.5) at Seahawks (-2.5) Total: 46.5
Still unbeaten after a 24-14 win over Denver, the 49ers head to Seattle to face a Seahawks team that almost blew a 21-point lead to the Chargers. Both offenses can be lethal, but the 49ers getting +8.5 in a divisional game could be a steal.
