NFC Playoff Scenarios: NFL Odds and Predictions
by George Monroy - 12/9/2014
The NFC Playoff picture is in a messier state of affairs than its AFC counterpart. Every division is currently separated by a single game, and the NFC East and South have multiple squads tied for the division lead. Certain matchups over the next few weeks will be amplified as they take on greater significance toward the playoff picture. Dallas and Philadelphia are set for a huge Week 15 matchup, Seattle and Arizona will battle for the NFC West division lead during Week 16, and to top things off Green Bay and Detroit are set to face each other during the final week of the season.
Let's take a closer look at the NFC playoff scenarios and figure out which teams will be in, which will be out and who is on the brink. All odds come from Sportsbook.ag.
NFC North
Green Bay Packers
Record : 10-3
NFC Odds : +130
Super Bowl Odds : +250
The NFC North is relatively cut-and-dry compared to the rest of the conference. The Packers currently hold a one-game lead over Detroit with upcoming matchups against Buffalo, Tampa Bay and a possible division showdown against the Lions during the final week of the season. If Green Bay were to lose that Week 17 matchup, the team would still probably grab a wild-card spot.
Prediction : No. 1 seed with a 13-3 record
NFC West
Arizona Cardinals : 10-3; NFC Odds: +1500; Super Bowl Odds: +3000
Seattle Seahawks : 9-4; NFC Odds: +220; Super Bowl Odds: +400
Arizona was able to get a huge win over Kansas City last week to keep its playoff hopes alive. The team, however, still has matchups against Seattle, St. Louis and San Francisco looming and may be looking at a 10-6 record to end the year. Seattle has the same three games to play, two of them at home, but has already proven that it can beat both Arizona and San Francisco. The most likely outcome in this situation is that the Seahawks win their last three games and leapfrog the Cardinals for the division lead.
Prediction : Seattle wins NFC West with a 12-4 record and earns the No. 2 seed.
NFC East
Philadelphia Eagles : 9-4; NFC Odds: +900; Super Bowl Odds: +1800
Dallas Cowboys : 9-4; NFC Odds: +1000; Super Bowl Odds: +2000
Philadelphia is currently in the driver's seat in the NFC East with a home matchup against Dallas being the only difficult game left on the schedule. The Cowboys, on the other hand, must still face Philadelphia and Indianapolis to close out the season, and a loss during either game will leave the team fighting for a wild-card spot with an 11-5 or 10-6 mark. Even if the Eagles lose their matchup to the Cowboys next week, they will still hold the tie breaker by virtue of their better record against division opponents.
Predictions : Eagles win NFC East with a 10-5 record and earn the No. 3 seed.
NFC South
Atlanta Falcons : 5-8; NFC Odds: +5000; Super Bowl Odds: +10000
New Orleans Saints : 5-8; NFC Odds: +2500; Super Bowl Odds: +5000
The winner of the NFC South could possibly enter the playoffs with the worst mark for a playoff team in NFL history. The Falcons or Saints could win their division with a 6-10 mark, which would eclipse Seattle's horrendous 7-9 record to win the NFC West a few years ago. Atlanta has games against Pittsburgh, New Orleans and Carolina, which could all be losses, while the Saints have matchups against Chicago, Atlanta and Tampa Bay, which seems like a situation where they can win two games.
Predictions : New Orleans wins the NFC South with a 7-9 record and earns the No. 4 seed.
Wild-Card Spots
Arizona Cardinals
Dallas Cowboys
Detroit Lions
There are really only three teams in the NFC with a realistic shot a wild-card spot. Detroit and Seattle currently hold the No. 5 and No. 6 seeds, and Dallas in next in line with a 9-4 record. San Francisco is currently sitting in the eighth spot in the conference with a 7-6 mark and trails the wild-card teams by two games. At this point, it looks like an 11-5 record will be the cut off for entry into the playoffs.
Predictions : Arizona earns first wildcard spot with an 11-5 record; Dallas earns second spot with 11-5 record.
