2014 Washington Redskins Opponents and Schedule Highlights
by Aaron Smith - 4/4/2014
After winning the NFC East in 2012, the Redskins had a questionable outlook entering 2013 due to Robert Griffin III's health. Even those who were most pessimistic about the Redskins in 2013 didn't envision this team being as bad as they were. Washington completely fell apart and finished 3-13 last year.
Mike Shanahan lost his job, and now Jay Gruden gets his first chance at a head coaching job. The big news from Washington this week is the Redskins have signed DeSean Jackson to a three-year deal. It's interesting to see him stay in the NFC East. The Redskins have plenty of questions coming into this season once again, but they definitely have more talent than a typical 3-13 team.
Let's take a look at Washington Redskins opponents during the 2014 season. The NFL will release schedule dates and game times later in April, but we do know who the Redskins will have to play. We'll start with the team's eight road games and finish with their eight home games.
2014 Washington Redskins Opponents: Road Schedule
At Dallas: The Redskins lost 31-16 at Dallas last year because they lost the special teams battle in that game very badly. Dwayne Harris went nuts on them, and the Redskins couldn't recover from that. Dallas is just 11-21 against the spread in their last 32 home games.
At New York Giants: The Redskins put up one of their most listless performances of the season in the 2013 finale at New York. The Giants won that game 20-6, and the Redskins had four turnovers in the contest. It was an ugly end to a very ugly season in Washington.
At Philadelphia: Washington was one of the few teams who couldn't cover in Philadelphia last year. The Eagles sprinted out to a 24-0 lead before the Redskins put together a futile comeback effort. Overall, the Eagles are just 9-24-1 ATS at home since the start of the 2010 season.
At Arizona: Arizona dominated with an 8-2 ATS record in non-division games last year. The Redskins have won eight straight games against the Cardinals, but only one of those meetings was in the last five years. Arizona will be favored here, and the Cardinals defense has made them a very difficult matchup.
At San Francisco: San Francisco is seen by many experts as the most complete team heading into the 2014 season. The 49ers are an impressive 25-15-2 ATS in their last 42 games as a home favorite. San Francisco has the best overall ATS record in the league since 2009 at 52-31-5. This will be a tough one for the Redskins.
At Houston: Houston has a new coaching staff and a new outlook altogether in 2014. The Texans were a dreadful 2-14 last year, but I wouldn't expect an ugly season from this talented team again in 2014. These teams haven't met in Houston since 2006, when the Redskins won 31-16.
At Indianapolis: Washington got a bad break in having to play the Colts in Indianapolis. Andrew Luck is 13-4 ATS in his 17 home starts in his first two years in the league. An RG3 vs. Andrew Luck matchup is always going to get lots of attention, so don't be surprised if this one is a prime time game.
At Minnesota: The Vikings hired defensive mastermind Mike Zimmer to be their new head coach in the offseason. Expect them to get better on defense quickly. They still have Adrian Peterson to pound it away on offense. Washington blew a 27-14 lead at Minnesota last year, and ended up losing 34-27.
2014 Washington Redskins Opponents: Home Schedule
Dallas: The Redskins and Cowboys have had an interesting series over the past few years. The Cowboys swept the season series in 2011. The Redskins swept the two games in 2012. The Cowboys then swept the season series again in 2013. This will be a game the Redskins need to win at home if they wish to contend in 2014.
New York Giants: The Redskins have won only three of their last 12 games against the Giants. Washington's defense actually did a nice job slowing down the Giants offense last year, but the Redskins couldn't get anything done offensively. This is another key game the Redskins need to win in the year ahead.
Philadelphia: Philadelphia should be the team to beat in the NFC East in 2014. The Eagles have a powerful offense that the Redskins have had a lot of trouble containing in recent history. If Washington is going to win this one, they'll likely have to put plenty of points on the board.
St Louis: Jeff Fisher's team plays hard, but they aren't very good away from home. St. Louis is just 10-14 ATS on the road in the last three years. The Redskins have the talent to beat the Rams, but they'll need to stay fundamentally sound and take care of the football.
Seattle: Seeing the defending Super Bowl Champion on your schedule is no fun. Seattle's amazing run through the playoffs showed just how strong of a team they have overall. If there is any silver lining for the Redskins, at least they won't have to travel to CenturyLink Field.
Jacksonville: Jacksonville is a team in disarray right now. The Jaguars don't appear to have anything going right. Washington doesn't have very many "easy" games on their schedule, but this is absolutely a must-win game for the Redskins.
Tennessee: Tennessee is just 12-18-2 ATS in their last 32 games overall. The Titans are just 7-14 ATS in their last 21 games as an underdog. This has the potential to be a very tight game. Washington is just 9-12 ATS in their last 21 non-division contests.
Tampa Bay: Lovie Smith is the new man in charge in Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers have lots of room for improvement after last year's 4-12 season. There are some pieces in place in Tampa Bay, but they are likely to struggle again this year. Tampa Bay is just 4-8 ATS in their last 12 as road favorites, so if they happen to be favored here it might be a good opportunity to back the Redskins.
