Best NFL Teaser Bets Week 10: Basic Strategy Teasers
Betting on the NFL is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. Honestly, I prefer to limit the amount of variables that can affect my wager. Lower-scoring sports are historically easier to bet on. I remember sparring with a guy in Vegas one time who was a professional hockey bettor.
Once he told me that there were only a couple of casinos in town, offering higher-limit hockey betting, the fat mouse in my little brain began to walk that rusty wheel.
After doing some research, I found that the sportsbooks clean house in the NBA, and they make more on the NFL, but the % is slightly less. Sometimes, they can lose money to pro baseball and hockey bettors over a large chunk of time. However, since they make so much off of football and basketball bettors, the chandeliers are still crystal.
I’m confident in my abilities to make good bets, but I still have to be honest with myself. If there are 5-10 of the best minds coming together to put out a betting line, maybe they know what they’re talking about. I used to think it was me against them, but they’re not the enemy.
There is an NFL betting strategy if implemented correctly and timely, is essentially free money. We can use a basic strategy to put together two-leg teasers, and this is historically a profitable wager.
Doc’s Sports offers NFL expert picks for every game on our NFL predictions page.
What is a Teaser?
A teaser is a parlay, but the bettor can add points to a spread or total for each leg. In turn, the sportsbooks obviously will lower your payout, but a sweet spot has been found. The payout used to be (-110), but the books changed it to (-120) because it works.
One of my online books won’t even let me do a two-leg NFL teaser. That ought to tell you something.
What is a Basic Strategy Teaser?
The basic strategy is quite simple. We only do 2-leg, 6-point NFL teasers. If we want to tease a betting underdog up, we look for teams with odds of (+1.5) to (+2.5). Adding 6 points moves the line through the key numbers of 3, 6, and 7. More NFL games end with these three margins of victory than any other key number. Now you have underdogs of (+7.5) to (+8.5).
If you want to tease a betting favorite down, look for the inverse with odds of (-7.5) to (-8.5), and after you tease them, you have favorites under a field goal at (-1.5) to (-2.5).
These are the requirements. Here's a couple of tips. It's always better to tease games with a lower point total because your 6 points mean more in a game with a low point total than they would in a game with the over/under set in the 50s. Your next tip is to implement this basic strategy as close to kickoff as possible. That is when the betting line is the most efficient. We let the market and the sportsbooks do a lot of the work for us.
Potential Week 10 Teaser Games
Denver Broncos (+8) at Kansas City Chiefs (-8)
We won our teaser last week with a couple of betting favorites. I usually prefer to tease the underdogs, but KC and Philly handled business for us, each winning by more than a field goal.
This week may be a little harder for the Chiefs, as Patrick Mahomes reaggravated his bad left ankle on Monday night.
Denver matched up horribly with the Ravens, and it showed. Do I think KC will cover this spread? Heck no. I understand this is a division game, but KC could begin to look ahead to their showdown in Buffalo next week.
Pittsburgh Steelers (+2.5) at Washington Commaners (-2.5)
Washington has brought in Marshon Lattimore, and you can expect the four-time Pro Bowl cornerback to contribute immediately. I like where both of these teams are headed right now, but the Commanders are putting up offensive numbers this season that haven't been replicated since the days of Randy Moss and Tom Brady. We keep saying regression is on the way, and it hasn't come. Even if it doesn't this week, I like Pittsburgh to keep it close and potentially win outright.
Tennessee Titans (+7.5) at LA Chargers (-7.5)
This game might have scared me in the first few weeks of the season, but these two teams are headed in completely opposite directions right now. The Chargers are allowing a league-best 12 points per game, and the Titans are giving up 26 for the season and 35/game over the past three.
