Indianapolis Colts Trade Quenton Nelson to Seattle Seahawks: Betting Impact and Predictions

The reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks made a big addition this morning, prying Quenton Nelson away from the Indianapolis Colts for a third-round pick and fifth-round pick. This is an impactful trade for Seattle as Nelson will instantly slot in at left guard and should help bolster an offensive line that was starting to falter in recent weeks.
Quenton Nelson has spent his entire career with the Colts, earning a Pro Bowl selection in all eight of his completed seasons. He entered the league as one of the most impressive guards of the decade and even finished third in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting, which is quite the accomplishment for a lineman. At 30 years old, Nelson is still one of the best guards in the league and is on track to make it a ninth consecutive Pro Bowl appearance this year. He is one of the best run blockers in the game, has shown no signs of slowing down, and will immediately make the Seahawks better at this stage of the season.
In terms of price tag, both teams will be happy with the agreement. For the Colts, Nelson was a pending free agent this offseason and it was looking unlikely that he would be able to re-sign in Indianapolis. Instead of collecting a late third-round compensatory pick, the Colts were able to cash in by getting the pick a year earlier, and adding a fifth-round pick in the deal. For the Seahawks, it is hard to find offensive line talent at this stage of the season, and they will be satisfied with what they gave up. This isn’t a backbreaking trade in terms of long-term goals. And if Nelson extends his contract with Seattle, which is likely, this will be a bargain for a player of his caliber.

For Seattle…
The Seahawks are getting a perennial Pro Bowler to help in both the pass game and the run game. Nelson has a PFF grade of 86.6 this year, which puts him third among 74 qualified guards. He hasn’t allowed a sack on 275 pass-blocking snaps and has only allowed six pressures through the first seven weeks, a 2.18% pressure-allowed rate. His run-blocking is just as good at fourth among qualified guards, and it doesn’t get much better than just one penalty without missing a snap this season. Nelson’s reputation speaks for itself, but the numbers also back up that he is still an elite offensive lineman at this stage of his career.
Nelson has played every snap this season at left guard and is exactly what the Seahawks have been missing. The Seattle offensive line hasn’t been bad this season, but the guard position has been weak. 2025 first-round draft pick Grey Zabel has been forced to play left guard instead of his preferred position on the right, and the addition of Nelson will allow him to slide back to the right. Zabel has done well during his short NFL career, but the combination of Christian Haynes and Beau Stephens has really struggled. The two combined to allow eight pressures against Denver and didn't fare much better against the Chiefs last week. With Zabel sliding to the right and Nelson getting the start at left guard, the Seahawks now have the depth at offensive line they previously lacked.
Protecting the quarterback is the most important job for an offensive lineman. However, for a guard like Nelson, his run-blocking ability is just as crucial. The Seahawks rank 29th in rushing EPA per play this season despite allegedly having a strong offensive line, and that comes down to patching a few holes rather than a major overhaul. Seattle has the top-end talent in the offensive line pass-block. And now that a well-rounded Nelson is alongside them in the trenches, the Seahawks should be a better team on the ground going forward. Their tackles are both in the top eight among PFF’s tackle ratings. And assuming Zabel makes the smooth transition back to the right side of the line, Seattle will be looking like a real threat to repeat as Super Bowl champions.
For Indianapolis…
This trade undoubtedly makes the Colts worse in the short term, but they really had no choice but to take Seattle’s attractive offer. Indianapolis was likely going to lose Nelson for nothing but a compensatory pick in the offseason, tying their hands when the Seahawks came knocking. This doesn’t mean the Colts are ready to throw in the towel, but they have now lost 12 of their last 14 games dating back to last season and sit at 2-5 in the AFC South.
The Colts entered Week 8 with the third-best offensive line, with Nelson and left tackle Bernhard Raimann forming one of, if not the best, left-side combinations in the NFL. Jonathan Taylor will get the credit for racking up rushing yards. However, without a strong offensive line anchored by Nelson, he would not have his impressive numbers on the ground this year. Taylor averaged 5.8 yards per carry on left-sided runs last season, but that number dropped to 4.2 yards per carry this year, partly due to poor play from Tanor Bortolini at center. In the passing game, Daniel Jones has been sacked 19 times this season despite Nelson allowing zero, so Nelson’s departure looms large for the Colts’ gunslinger. His immediate replacement hasn’t been confirmed, but whoever it ends up being, they will undoubtedly be a downgrade compared to the eight-time Pro Bowler.
Best Bets:
There hasn’t been much movement in the betting market following this move, making it the perfect time to attack before the odds catch up. Let’s start with the less exciting team, Indianapolis. The Colts have -2000 odds to miss the playoffs with +1100 odds to make a dash up the standings, and this trade makes it even harder to tail them. There have been rumors swirling that they will move on from Jonathan Taylor and hit the reset button on the franchise, and the wins will likely be few and far between. We could take the -2000 odds as a parlay piece for them to miss the playoffs at 2-5, but there is very little money to be made there. Instead, let’s look at their regular season wins, which currently sit at 6.5. The Colts would need to go 5-5 down the stretch to surpass this total, which feels like quite the ask for a rebuilding team. They are 7.5-point underdogs against Jacksonville in Week 8, so unless they pull off that upset, seven wins feels out of the question. We can still get -120 odds on the under, making it the perfect way to target the Colts after this move.
For Seattle, we have many more options to attack. They are +400 to win the NFC West, trailing the San Francisco 49ers, but are still among the Super Bowl favorites at +1100 odds. It is hard to say how much the addition of Nelson moves the needle in terms of their overall play, but it will certainly have Sam Darnold more comfortable in the pocket. He is a long shot for MVP, but the arrival of Nelson will indirectly help Jaxson Smith-Njigba add to his already ridiculous season. Smith-Njigba is one of the frontrunners for Offensive Player of the Year. And if Darnold has more time in the pocket to allow the exceptional route-runner to create separation, we could see him get even better in the second half of the season. Darnold has been frequently pressured, and the Seahawks just addressed their biggest issue on the offensive line, making this offense a suddenly scary unit. Jahmyr Gibbs and Kenneth Walker III are the other favorites to win the award, but they will be unable to match the increased production Smith-Njigba gets from this deal. The Seahawks odds have shortened slightly since this trade was announced, but Smith-Njigba’s have held firm, making him the best bet for the Seahawks.
Top Pick: Indianapolis Colts Under 6.5 Wins -120
Pick: Jaxson Smith-Njigba to Win Offensive Player of the Year +350
