NFL Betting Predictions: Week 9 Opening Line Report and Best Bets

One of the best ways to consistently profit in the NFL is by securing closing line value. Closing line value, or CLV, is when you lock in a wager well before kickoff, and the price moves in your favor before the game begins. For example, we secured the Washington Commanders at -4.5 on the spread early last week, and the price moved to -5.5 or even -6.5 on some books before kickoff. It managed to be a sweat-free 17-point win for the Commanders, but that extra point in our favor could be the difference between winning and losing over the course of the season. In addition to the Commanders’ cover, we also correctly took the Detroit Lions -3.5 over the Vikings, a number they narrowly covered, but fell short of the perfect week when the Falcons were shut out by the Buccaneers. Before we get into the Week 9 picks, here are the biggest storylines from a pivotal Week 8.
Doc’s Sports offers NFL expert picks for every game on our NFL predictions page.
- Minshew Mania: The Dallas Cowboys held a comfortable 17-3 lead late in the third quarter when the Arizona Cardinals benched Jacoby Brissett for Gardner Minshew. Two snaps later, the Cardinals scored a touchdown, and they ended up prevailing in overtime after missing a game-winning PAT with six seconds left in the fourth quarter. Dallas chokes another lead, what else is new?
- Jaguars Dominate: Jacksonville secured the biggest margin of victory so far this season with a 42-7 beatdown against the Colts. Indianapolis is already selling their best pieces, while the Jaguars extended their lead atop of the AFC South. Trevor Lawrence only needed to complete ten passes in the win, as five Colts turnovers allowed the Jaguars to capitalize on short fields.
- Baker and the Bucs Win Ugly: Baker Mayfield became the first quarterback to win a game without completing a pass since 1974, as the Buccaneers ran over the Falcons 16-0. It helped that Atlanta failed to convert three fourth downs, Michael Penix Jr. threw four interceptions, and the Falcons missed a field goal. Either way, the Buccaneers are right back in the mix for the NFC South.
- Where do the Ravens go next? Lamar Jackson injured his thumb during his first pass attempt against the Bills last week, and it could be season-ending. Backup Tyler Huntley also got hurt, forcing Baltimore to turn to Joe Fagnano at quarterback. They unsurprisingly lost 36-10, and it looks like it may be another lost season in Baltimore.
- Vikings Lose: The last undefeated team went down in Week 8 as the Lions picked up a massive 19-15 win over Minnesota. It wasn’t pretty, but Detroit found a way. With all four NFC North teams at 5-3 or better, it is still anyone’s division.
- Bengals Battle Back: Joe Burrow isn’t known for his comebacks, but his five touchdowns and 435 passing yards after falling behind 13-0 will silence the doubters for now. The Bengals prevailed 43-36 in overtime against the Titans, but Tennessee’s 32nd-ranked offense scoring 36 points raises red flags going forward.
- Bears Make Statement: It wasn’t just that the Bears beat the reigning champions on Monday night, it was how they did it. Chicago dominated from start to finish, holding the Seahawks to 86 rush yards on 19 attempts, while Sam Darnold completed only half of his passes in the defeat. The Bears look like a complete team on both sides of the ball, and sent a warning to the league with their primetime win.
It was an eventful Week 8 across the league, and Week 9 looks like it could be even better. There are three games that have caught my attention as having value early in the week, so let’s dive right in.
Game 1: Cleveland Browns at New Orleans Saints
Opening Line: New Orleans Saints (-2.5)
The Browns looked awful against the Steelers last week while the Saints had a week off to rest, but it is still hard to justify New Orleans in the favorite role. The Saints are 2-5 on the season with a bottom-ten offense and a bottom-five defense, and there is very little reason for optimism right now. Teams traditionally get a little bump after a bye week, but unlocking a stingy Browns defense will be a whole other story. Cleveland has looked fantastic on that side of the ball this season, and it is the driving force behind their five victories. Jared Verse has been able to help replace the production lost from Myles Garrett, and you could argue the five best defenders in this matchup all play for Cleveland. This has all the makings of a sloppy game that goes down to the wire, and I trust Cleveland to prevail in that situation. All five of their wins have seen Deshaun Watson lead a late scoring drive in the fourth, and they will be able to do so again versus the Saints in Week 9. The points on the spread makes this even better, and I expect this line to be bet closer to a pick ‘em by the time kickoff rolls around.
Pick: Cleveland Browns (+2.5)
Game 2: Green Bay Packers at New England Patriots
Opening Line: New England Patriots (-2.5)
The Patriots have certainly played better football than they did against the Dolphins, but they still found a way to get the victory, and will do so again when the Packers come to town. Both of these teams have strong, balanced defensive units, which means it will come down to which offense can execute in a big matchup for both sides. Jordan Love has shown signs of life after a slow start, but skating through easy defensive matchups is not the same as taking down the reigning AFC champions. The Packers run game has been atrocious this year, and New England has the pieces in the secondary to stop Love from converting third-and-longs. Meanwhile, Drake Maye and company have been able to carve apart their opposition for four wins in their last five games. Their run game is consistent, their passing game is strong with short, intermediate, and deep throws, and they match up nicely against the Packers. Green Bay is not as good as their record suggests, and a lengthy injury report will prevent them from covering. Unlike the Browns spread, this is a number I see jumping up to three points more often than dropping down, making it crucial to lock it in at -2.5 while you still can.
Pick: New England Patriots (-2.5)
Game 3: Buffalo Bills at Minnesota Vikings
Opening Line: Buffalo Bills (-3)
The No. 1 offense against the No. 1 defense on Monday Night Football? Get your popcorn. While this should be a close one for long stretches, how can we fade Buffalo at this stage of the season? The Bills are 6-1 with their only loss being a close one against the Patriots, scoring at least 24 points in every game this season with 33+ in five of those seven. Minnesota is certainly their toughest defensive test yet, but Buffalo found offensive success against Houston, New England, Baltimore, and the Los Angeles Rams. Josh Allen can do superhuman things in scrambles, James Cook is playing the best football of his career, and very deep wide receiver and tight end groups give Allen plenty of targets to aim at. The Brian Flores blitz will not slow him down, and the Bills will almost certainly reach their season-low 24 points at the very minimum. Can the Vikings score 21+? Hard to count on it. They have only scored more than 23 points once this year, and that was in Week 1, with an average of 16.8 PPG since the opening week. To make matters worse, Kyler Murray is dealing with a hamstring injury, which means Carson Wentz could be in line to start. The talent gap between Wentz and Allen is so large that even a strong Vikings defense against an average Bills defense will not be enough to tilt the scales in favor of the Vikings. It is looking increasingly likely that Minnesota will take their time with Murray to prioritize the rest of their season rather than this game. This line is sitting at exactly -3 right now, which is the most crucial number in the NFL. Lock in the flat line before potentially having to pay for the hook later this week.
Pick: Buffalo Bills (-3)
Season Record: 9-15
