NFL Confidence Pool Picks Week 8

The halfway point of the regular season has a way of clarifying which teams are built to handle the physical grind and which ones start to fray under the accumulating weight of injuries, short weeks, and the simple reality that defensive coordinators have now had six or seven games of film. Multiple starting quarterbacks are dealing with lower-body issues that limit their mobility, several offensive lines are missing key edge pieces, and a handful of defenses are being forced into heavier nickel packages because of injuries in the secondary. Those absences tend to show up most clearly on early downs, where the ability to stay on schedule or force an opponent behind the sticks becomes the difference between controlling the tempo and playing catch-up for three quarters.
With only fourteen games on the schedule and four teams idle, the slate still offers several matchups where one side has shown a clearer ability to win the line of scrimmage without needing to manufacture pressure through extra rushers. That edge has been particularly valuable for teams that can generate negative plays in the passing game while still limiting yards after the catch, and it remains the most consistent separator between the clubs that have stayed competitive in close games and those that have watched leads evaporate once the script tilts. Last week's 7-7, 62-point effort reminded us how thin those margins remain when several of the higher-confidence selections ran into uncharacteristic turnover problems or red-zone stalls. The same themes run through the rankings below, with the higher-confidence selections leaning on those structural advantages rather than any single explosive play or late-game variance.

14 points – Cincinnati Bengals over Tennessee Titans:
The Titans have spent most of the year trying to manufacture explosive plays that never quite arrive. Cincinnati can sit in the same front, force them into third-and-long, and let the clock do the rest. There's no need to invent anything here.
13 points – Jacksonville Jaguars over Indianapolis Colts:
Indianapolis has been living on chunk plays that require clean pockets. Jacksonville has been happy to take the pocket away without blitzing much. Once the Colts have to string together five or six consecutive gains, the gap shows up.
12 points – New England Patriots over Miami Dolphins:
Miami's speed works when the defense is already stretched. New England has been willing to keep extra bodies near the line and force the Dolphins to work the short areas all afternoon. That style of game has not suited Miami this year.
11 points – Dallas Cowboys over Arizona Cardinals:
Arizona keeps finding ways to fall behind the chains early and then never recovers. Dallas can stay on schedule with the run and the short passing game, then hit a couple of explosives once the Cardinals have to sell out. The Cowboys don't need a perfect day.
10 points – Los Angeles Rams over Los Angeles Chargers:
The Chargers have not been able to protect on early downs against four-man rushes. The Rams can generate pressure without changing their front, which lets them keep numbers in coverage. That combination has been a problem for Los Angeles all season.
9 points – Buffalo Bills over Baltimore Ravens:
Baltimore can still create problems with the run and the designed quarterback movement, but Buffalo has been more consistent finishing drives once they get into the red zone. Highmark is a loud building on a 1 p.m. window; the Bills have been better at turning that noise into points.
8 points – Pittsburgh Steelers over Cleveland Browns:
Cleveland has been more effective when they can dictate tempo with the run. Pittsburgh's front has won first down without overcommitting, which keeps the Browns from ever getting into a rhythm. The Steelers don't need big plays if they keep the Browns behind schedule.
7 points – Green Bay Packers over Carolina Panthers (TNF):
Lambeau on a short week is a difficult place to install anything new. Carolina has been inconsistent in the second half of games when the other team can sit in the same coverage looks. Green Bay has enough offensive continuity to keep the Panthers guessing without taking big risks.
6 points – Seattle Seahawks over Chicago Bears (MNF):
Chicago has been better when they can create explosive plays off play-action. Seattle's defense has been willing to keep a safety deep and force the Bears to work underneath. Lumen Field at night tends to punish teams that have to throw the ball on schedule.
5 points – Detroit Lions over Minnesota Vikings:
Minnesota has been the more consistent team all year, but Detroit at home has created negative plays on early downs without blitzing. The Lions can force the Vikings into third-and-long situations where the deep ball becomes harder to complete. This one feels closer than the records suggest.
4 points – Tampa Bay Buccaneers over Atlanta Falcons:
Atlanta has been better when the edge is soft, and they can get the ball outside. Tampa has been setting the edge and funneling everything back inside. Once the Falcons have to work between the tackles for four quarters, the efficiency drops.
3 points – Kansas City Chiefs over Denver Broncos:
Denver has been physical up front and has limited explosive plays. Kansas City still finishes drives at a higher rate once they get inside the 30. The Chiefs can stay balanced without forcing the issue, and that has been enough in these matchups.
2 points – New York Jets over Las Vegas Raiders:
Neither team has been consistent on early downs. The Jets have been slightly better at forcing field goals in the red zone. This is the kind of game that can turn on one turnover or one special-teams play, so the number stays low.
1 point – Washington Commanders over Philadelphia Eagles (SNF):
Both offenses have dealt with injuries and struggled to stay on schedule. Washington at home has limited explosive plays, which should force the Eagles into the kind of long drives they've struggled to sustain. It's a lean more than a conviction, and the number reflects that.
Bye Teams
Houston Texans, New Orleans Saints, New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers.
