MLB Betting and Handicapping: Totals Trends Report
by Aaron Smith - 4/16/2013
We’re only a couple weeks into the MLB season, but we’re getting to the point now where we have enough data to try to get a good read on some teams. Baseball is such a data-driven sport that keeping track of the numbers is a great idea.
MLB Handicapping Hot/Cold Pitchers and Hitters Betting Report
by Ricky Dimon - 4/16/2013
The Braves feasted on weak competition for a while at the beginning of this season, but it’s safe to say their 11-1 record is no fluke…not after a road sweep of highly-touted Washington last weekend. Paul Maholm and the rest of the pitching staff are throwing darts, while newcomer Justin Upton is on fire at the plate.
MLB Betting and Handicapping: Scouting the Week Ahead
by Alan Matthews - 4/15/2013
The Atlanta Braves look like the best team in baseball right now, off to an 11-1 start and winners of nine straight entering Tuesday's interleague series opener against the Kansas City Royals. The Braves finished off a hugely impressive sweep of the Washington Nationals over the weekend.
This Week in MLB Baseball Betting By the Numbers
by Aaron Smith - 4/15/2013
Opening Day is now two weeks old, and the baseball season is up and running in full swing. A winning season can’t be made in the course of two weeks, but bad betting habits can go a long way toward making the season a failure in two weeks if you aren’t doing your homework.
Astros at Angels Picks and MLB Betting Odds
by Alan Matthews - 4/13/2013
It wasn't a good week to be the best right-handed pitcher on a Los Angeles baseball team. On Tuesday, the AL West-favored Angels put ace Jered Weaver on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left (non-throwing) elbow he hurt while falling off the mound in Sunday's game against Texas. Weaver is out 4-6 weeks.
Braves at Nationals Picks and MLB Betting Odds
by Robert Ferringo - 4/12/2013
It’s never too early in the Major League Baseball season to make a statement. That is exactly what Atlanta and Washington will try to do when they meet at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Nationals Park in Washington. These two National League East rivals are the two favorites to win their division and, as of Friday, had two of the best records in baseball.
MLB Handicapping: Early Betting Surprises
by Trevor Whenham - 4/10/2013
A week means nothing in the grand scheme of things in a baseball season. It’s barely a blip on the radar. Still, at the start of the season we are forced to make guesses and rely on assumptions about how teams will perform out of the gate and what that means for early betting opportunities. By looking at how teams have performed in the opening week of the season compared to those expectations — spotting the pleasant surprises and the early disappointments — we can start to adjust our expectations before they cost too much.
Handicapping the Best 2013 MLB Rookies
by Trevor Whenham - 4/10/2013
Last year baseball fans and bettors were incredibly spoiled when it came to rookies. Bryce Harper had an epic rookie season that would have been noteworthy most years, but he was totally overshadowed by the great season that Mike Trout had — not just great for a rookie, either. We aren’t going to see a rookie season like either of those two had last year, but there are still several rookies who can have a big impact for bettors, so they are well worth getting to know.
MLB Handicapping: Best Bullpens to Bank On
by Trevor Whenham - 4/10/2013
Casual baseball bettors tend not to pay as much attention to bullpens as they should. The bullpen isn’t sexy — at least not unless there is a high-profile closer. With starters only expected to last five or six innings by a lot of teams these days, though, the quality of the bullpen, the availability of relievers on that day, and the recent form can make the difference between a bet that is packed with value and one that is a total dud. Here’s a handicapping look at four bullpens that have the potential to be big difference-makers this year:
MLB Handicapping Hot/Cold Pitchers and Hitters Betting Report
by Ricky Dimon - 4/8/2013
It’s been a mixed bag for former Cy Young Award winners to begin the 2013 Major League Baseball season. Clayton Kershaw has been unhittable, but R.A. Dickey and David Price are off to slower starts in the American League. Interestingly enough, both hurlers have already lost games to Cleveland’s Justin Masterson.
This Week in MLB Baseball Betting By the Numbers
by Aaron Smith - 4/8/2013
The Major League Baseball season is off and running. There isn’t a longer season in all of sports. Successful baseball bettors are always mindful of the fact that this season is six months long, and there are going to be plenty of bumps along the way. It is definitely a grind-it-out type of season!
MLB Bold Baseball Betting Predictions for 2013
by Trevor Whenham - 4/3/2013
We’re at the beginning of another long, glorious baseball season. From now to October there will be games virtually every day. It’s a buffet of betting greatness. As we embark on this season, here are nine bold betting predictions for 2013. It’s like a crystal ball into the future:
MLB Handicapping: Starters Who Should be in Minor Leagues
by Trevor Whenham - 4/3/2013
It is very tough for a Major League team to construct a solid five-man rotation. Heck, the Yankees spend more than the GDP of most countries on their payroll each year, and it has been a long time since their rotation has been more than just passable. Even knowing the challenges, though, there are some roster moves at the start of each season that really make you shake your head. Are teams really desperate enough to think that these guys are the best they can do with their rotation? Here are four guys that really caught my eye and who could provide nice opportunities to bet against them:
MLB Handicapping Advice: Overrated Teams
by Robert Ferringo - 4/2/2013
There is no one in sports as optimistic as a Major League Baseball fan in April. Hope is the calling card of the spring. And as the 2013 baseball betting season gets underway, there are teams and talents and t-shirt-emblazoned fans just dying to believe that this could be Their Year. The result is a sort of delusion that leads to misguided money management and broken dreams for bettors trying to ride the lightning on their favorite team or that I-called-it underdog.
2013 MLB Handicapping Tips: Underrated Teams
by Robert Ferringo - 4/2/2013
It is easy in baseball to jump on the favorite. You find the team with the bigger bats, the better arms, and the bloated payroll and you are usually going to find the team with 90 wins and a playoff date. But the best teams in baseball are usually fairly obvious.
MLB Predictions: 2013 AL and NL MVP Award Props Odds
by Alan Matthews - 3/28/2013
Thank you Buster Posey! Ian Kinsler? Thanks for nothing! Last year in my spring American League and National League MVP props story, I thought the best value on the board in the Senior Circuit was Giants catcher Buster Posey at 25/1. I’ll be honest in that I thought Posey had almost no chance to win it at the all-star break (he wasn’t even an option on Bovada’s midseason MVP props).
2013 MLB Handicapping: Unpredictable Pitchers
by Trevor Whenham - 3/28/2013
In the past weeks we have looked at pitchers who I am very optimistic about this year — I expect them to have a great season. We’ve also looked at the guys I just don’t have high hopes for at all. Now it’s time to look at the third group — the guys I have absolutely no idea about. Each of these guys has the clear potential to be very good — near the top of their league. They also have the potential to be a total nightmare for their teams, the fans, and bettors who choose to trust them.
Handicapping the MLB Opening Day Matchups
by Trevor Whenham - 3/27/2013
I love Spring Training. It’s Major League Baseball in its purest and simplest form. There comes a time every year, though, that I suddenly get tired of the spring and start to itch for the games to actually count. I’ve reached that point this year.
MLB Predictions: 2013 Pitching Strikeout Leaders
by Alan Matthews - 3/26/2013
When determining which pitcher will lead Major League Baseball in strikeouts, you might be inclined to lean toward a National League hurler. After all, they get an easy strikeout or two when the opposing pitcher bats. But no NL pitcher has led baseball since 2008 when Tim Lincecum did it with 265.
Handicapping the New York Yankees
by Trevor Whenham - 3/23/2013
There is much more angst surrounding the New York Yankees this year than any year in recent memory. The empire has undoubtedly been fading for a while now, but this year people are widely predicting that it could come crashing down to earth. The start the team has had in the spring has done little to ease those concerns — they are dead last in the Grapefruit League. So, is this spring a good indication that the Yankees really are in trouble this year? Or have we really learned little about this team so far? Let’s take a look:
