NHL Totals Betting Advice: Hot and Cold Over and Under Teams
by Ryan Cobbett - 11/16/2023
We are just under 20 games into the season, and already there have been some major shakeups compared to offseason thinking. Edmonton was the first to fire their coach… who would’ve thought? But the Oilers are 2-0 under their new leader. The Canucks have three guys tied for the team lead in points with 26, and yes that also leads the league. Vancouver is now tied with the reigning Vegas Golden Knights atop the Pacific Division thanks to their three-headed offensive monster and their dominating netminder.
Expert NHL Handicapping Roundup + Saturday Free Pick for 11/11/2023
by Ryan Cobbett - 11/10/2023
It’s time for another NHL Friday roundup. Last week we thought the Sharks were doomed, but don’t look now but San Jose has now won back-to-back games and no longer sit alone at the bottom of the league standings as Edmonton finds themselves in a peculiar spot with just five points thus far. After being mentioned in last week’s article, Edmonton went 0-3 with a -8 goal-differential this last week and now sit at 2-9-1. I hope you have caught on by now, but the Canucks are a good team that may end up being great. Since last week’s mention, they are 3-0 ATS, still lead the league in goals, and have allowed the second least number of goals this season. I would still endorse fading Edmonton, while backing Vancouver let’s take a look at four more notable betting trends for the week ahead.
Hot and Cold NHL Betting Teams: Moneyline and ATS
by Ryan Cobbett - 11/8/2023
As we start another week filled with hockey, let’s take a look at some trends that have been established through teams’ first 10-12 games. Vegas and Vancouver, Dallas and Colorado, NYR and New Jersey, and Boston and Detroit find themselves at the top of their respective divisions at this point in the season, while teams like San Jose, Edmonton, and Calgary could not have imagined a worse start. The Oilers might be bad, but even I say that with a laugh because surely Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl figure it out… right?
Expert NHL Handicapping Roundup + Saturday Free Pick
by Ryan Cobbett - 11/3/2023
As we enter the second month of the season, it is time to take our first deep dive into some betting trends that were established through the first nine or 10 games each team has played. Last night’s slate gave us fans a reminder on just how intensely competitive this sport is, even in the regular season. Boston blew a 2-0 lead in all of five minutes before winning in a shootout over division opponent Toronto, Dallas went into Edmonton and beat the (not so?) high-flying Oilers with backup netminder Scott Wedgewood, and the Rangers beat Carolina thanks to a late goal by Will Cuylle.
2023 Vegas Golden Knights Predictions with Futures Odds and Expert NHL Picks
by Ryan Cobbett - 10/4/2023
What a ride it was for the Vegas Golden Knights, as they went on to hoist the Stanley Cup last season as they cooled off a hot Florida Panthers team in dominating fashion. They won the championship in five games and posted a +14-goal differential in the series. Domination. That was the story all year for Vegas. In the postseason they went 16-4-2 and finished with a +31-goal differential.
2023 Vancouver Canucks Predictions with Futures Odds and Expert NHL Picks
by Ryan Cobbett - 10/4/2023
The Vancouver Canucks were one of those middle of the pack teams. They defined mediocrity last season, finishing with 83 points. Their goaltending was awful last season, as they allowed nearly 300 goals. The Canucks were always seemingly working from behind to bail out their poor goaltending. Despite allowing a lot of goals, they managed to finish with just a -22-goal differential thanks to an above average offense. Vancouver had an awful penalty kill, as they killed just 71.6% of their opponents PP chances, while cashing in on 22.7% of their PP chances. The Canucks were awful against Eastern Conference opponents, as they went just 10-20-2 against them last season. They did dominate their own divisional opponents, going 16-9-1 against Pacific Division foes.
2023 Los Angeles Kings Predictions with Futures Odds and Expert NHL Picks
by Ryan Cobbett - 10/4/2023
The Los Angeles Kings fought off Seattle for the final guaranteed spot in the Pacific Division last season, finishing with 104 points. They were stellar at home, with 56 of their 104 points on home ice. They didn’t do great against their division opponents, but they owned the other Western Conference division. They were 15-6-3 against Central Division opponents while also performing well against the Atlantic Division, going 11-4-1.
2023 Washington Capitals Predictions with Futures Odds and Expert NHL Picks
by Ryan Cobbett - 10/4/2023
The Washington Capitals were not good a season ago and won’t be good this upcoming season. They had little firepower to work with and totaled a mere 255 goals on the year. Their season ended in poor fashion as they went 2-6-2 in their final 10 matchups. Washington would, surprisingly, have a winning record against the best division in the NHL last season, holding a 9-5-2 record against the Pacific Division, but they struggled against the other three divisions, going 8-14-2 against the Atlantic Division, 12-9-5 against the Metro Division, and 6-9-1 against the Central Division.
2023 New York Rangers Predictions with Futures Odds and Expert NHL Picks
by Ryan Cobbett - 10/4/2023
The New York Rangers were electric at times last year and wound-up finishing third in the Metro behind Carolina and New Jersey. They allowed just 219 goals and would dominate on the road with 56 of their 107 points being accumulated away from their home ice. Unfortunately for the Rangers, they would blow a 2-0 lead and went on to lose in seven games against New Jersey in the first-round last season. New York absolutely dominated the Western Conference last season.
2023 Edmonton Oilers Predictions with Futures Odds and Expert NHL Picks
by Ryan Cobbett - 10/4/2023
The Edmonton Oilers are the most electric team in the league. Despite falling in six games to Vegas in the second round of the playoffs, Edmonton had an incredible season and forecasts to do more of the same again this season. They led the league with 325 goals, 20 more than the second place Bruins, and posted a +65-point differential, which was the second-best mark in the Western Conference behind only the Stars. Their 32.4% PP% was the best in the league, by far, while their PK% of 77% was mediocre. They dominated Western Conference foes as they posted a solid 33-12-5 record against them.
2023 Philadelphia Flyers Predictions with Futures Odds and Expert NHL Picks
by Ryan Cobbett - 10/4/2023
The Philadelphia Flyers were not great last season, and this season won’t be much kinder. They totaled just 75 points last season and just could not generate any offense. They finished with just 222 goals, which was the second lowest total in the Eastern Conference. Their 13 OT Losses was among the most in the NHL, and they finished just 3-13 in OT games last year.
2023 Columbus Blue Jackets Predictions with Futures Odds and Expert NHL Picks
by Ryan Cobbett - 10/3/2023
Nothing went right for the Metro’s bottom feeder, the Columbus Blue Jackets, last season. After cashing in on Star F Johnny Gaudreau, Columbus would total just 59 points last season. They were a laughingstock away from home, as they went just 9-25-7 on the road. Their -116-goal differential was the second worst in the NHL last season. They did ok on their home ice but managed to win just nine games on the road. Their 214 goals scored was the worst in the Eastern Conference and third lowest in the NHL.
2023 Calgary Flames Predictions with Futures Odds and Expert NHL Picks
by Ryan Cobbett - 10/3/2023
The Calgary Flames came up just short of putting themselves in the postseason picture last season, being edged by the Jets. Their 17 OT losses ranked most in the league, and just two of those games going to a win would have made the difference for the Flames. They finished with a +8-goal differential and were the only non-playoff team to have a positive differential. The Flames had a great penalty kill as they killed 82.6% of the PP deficits they faced. Oddly enough, their success came against their division opponents, as they went 16-6-4 against the members of the best division in hockey a season ago. Outside of the division, they were 10-9-5 against the Central, 5-7-4 against the Atlantic, and 7-5-4 against the Metro.
2023 Seattle Kraken Predictions with Futures Odds and Expert NHL Picks
by Ryan Cobbett - 10/3/2023
Last season the Seattle Kraken played way out of their shoes all season long. They gave the Stars a good fight in the second round after knocking off Colorado in the opening round. However, I am all in on Seattle being a fluke. I can bite my words later this season if they repeat their success. However, this team just was in outer space all year. They somehow finished with 100 points despite having a losing record at home. Their success on the road was crucial to their success, as they went 26-11-4 away from their home ice. This team could flat out score, as they amassed 289 goals last season, which was the second most in the Pacific Division.
2023 Pittsburgh Penguins Predictions with Futures Odds and Expert NHL Picks
by Ryan Cobbett - 10/3/2023
The Pittsburgh Penguins collapsed down the stretch and missed out on the playoffs after Florida got hot. They were a below .500 team on the road, and that was a big reason why they fell short of a playoff berth. This team defined mediocre, with a -5-goal differential and amassing 40 wins and 42 total losses. They went 6-10 to end the year. Their special teams’ play wasn’t special but wasn’t bad either.
2023 San Jose Sharks Predictions with Futures Odds and Expert NHL Picks
by Ryan Cobbett - 10/2/2023
Well, they were better than the Anaheim Ducks. The San Jose Sharks finished with 60 points and will likely regress this season. They posted a -87-goal differential and won just eight games on their home ice. They also carried a 5-16 record in OT games. They allowed 321 goals to their opponents, which was the third highest mark in the NHL. Somehow, they did post a great PK% as they killed 82.4% of their opponents PP tries.
2023 Winnipeg Jets Predictions with Futures Odds and Expert NHL Picks
by Ryan Cobbett - 10/2/2023
The Winnipeg Jets snagged the last wild card spot last season after doing just enough to hold off the Calgary Flames. The Jets were really good at home, going 26-13-2, but they really struggled on the road, going just 20-20-1. They were completely outmatched in the playoffs last year, falling to the Golden Knights in five games. Their penalty kill was above average, as they killed 82.4% of the PP deficits they faced. The Jets also struggled mightily against Eastern Conference opponents, as they went just 15-17 in those matches.
2023 Anaheim Ducks Predictions with Futures Odds and Expert NHL Picks
by Ryan Cobbett - 10/2/2023
Did anything go right for the Anaheim Ducks last season? They would go on to finish dead last in the league as they managed a mere 58 points on the season. Not only that, but after being by far the worst team on the ice, luck wasn’t on their side when it came to the draft lottery as they would fall out of the top pick and miss out on Connor Bedard. Their -129-goal differential was the worst in the NHL by 13 goals, while their 338 goals allowed was also the worst in the league.
2023 Nashville Predators Predictions with Futures Odds and Expert NHL Picks
by Ryan Cobbett - 10/1/2023
Despite injuries and plenty of trades, the Nashville Predators still found themselves in the playoff race down the stretch. Unfortunately, they fell 4 points shy of earning the final wild card spot. Offense was the big issue for the Preds, as they were the only team to post a winning season with a negative goal differential (-9). They were incredible defending the home ice, as they went 22-15-4 in front of their fans. They traded away basically everyone that contributed, except for Juuse Saros and Filip Forsberg. They traded away Nino Nederreiter, Mattias Ekholm, Tanner Jeannot, and Mikael Granlund and somehow still managed to be a 92-point team.
2023 St. Louis Blues Predictions with Futures Odds and Expert NHL Picks
by Ryan Cobbett - 10/1/2023
The Saint Louis Blues sang the blues last season after managing just 81 points. Though they were plenty capable of scoring a lot of goals, their goalie situation was and still is a complete mess. They allowed 301 goals last season, which was tied for the third most in the Western Conference last season. Other than their goalie situation being awful, all around this team was just below average in everything. Losing record at home and on the road, -38-goal differential, and 7-8 in OT games. They went 9-16-1 in division matchups last season.
