2014 NFL Draft Prop Bet Odds with Picks and Predictions
by George Monroy - 5/5/2014
The 2014 NFL Draft is set to steal back the attention of the sports world, if only for one night, this Thursday, May 8 at 8:00 p.m. EST. The Houston Texans will be on the clock first with the No. 1 pick, while St. Louis, Jacksonville, Cleveland and Oakland will round out the top five. There will also be no shortage of storylines and intriguing draft prospects throughout the night.
Jadeveon Clowney is thought to be a game-changing player, while former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel is as interesting of a prospect the game has seen over the last few years. Wide receiver Sammy Watkins, offensive tackle Jake Matthews and outside linebacker Khalil Mack are expected be the other three players taken in the top five on Thursday. Let's take a closer look at the 2014 draft and go over a few of the most interesting prop bets with predictions and analysis. All odds come from Sportsbook.ag.
Number of quarterbacks taken in the first round?
"Over" 3.5: +110
"Under" 3.5: -150
The under is a solid favorite here, and a few teams would have to make some unexpected and perhaps shocking picks in order for this wager to go "over". Manziel and Blake Bortles are the only consensus first-round quarterback picks, while Derek Carr could sneak in late in the round. Teddy Bridgewater is considered the fourth-best quarterback in the draft and would be the pick that would take the prop bet over. Bridgewater's draft stock has fallen considerably over the last month, and he will probably be taken during the middle of the second round. Take the under.
Will a running back be taken in the first round?
"Yes": +1000
"No": -2000
There may not be any NFL experts that are currently expecting a running back to be taken in the first round. The position has lost a lot of its luster over the past few years, and very few teams are even looking to establish the run with any consistency. Carlos Hyde of Ohio State is generally considered to be the top running back prospect, but he is not expected to be drafted until early in the second round. There is very little reason to take the no on this wager, but there is some value in hoping that a team will get antsy and take a very good running back late in the first round.
Who will be drafted first?
Johnny Manziel: -200
Blake Bortles: +150
This is a very interesting wager that could really go either way. Bortles is considered the safer pick at quarterback in many circles, but Manziel has far more media hype under his belt. Bortles is the smarter and maybe even better choice, but the most likely outcome is that teams will fall in love with the possibilities of an exciting and media savvy quarterback leading their team. Manziel is a favorite to be a top five pick on Thursday.
Johnny Manziel draft position
Over 5.5: +110
Under 5.5: -150
Most expert mock drafts have Manziel being drafted in the top five, and very few have him slipping past the Cleveland Browns at the No. 4 spot. Houston and St. Louis will almost certainly not take a quarterback with the top two picks, while Jacksonville could surprise people by taking a chance on the quarterback. However, what would be shocking if both Cleveland and Oakland passed on Manziel. Both teams desperately need a quarterback, and the former Heisman winner's media appeal will be more than enough for the Raiders to take a chance on him. Take the under.
