Aristides was an Athenian statesman and general during the Persian War. He was nicknamed, “The Just” and was a huge fan of boxed exactas. He was also the namesake of a Pennsylvanian horse breeder, Aristides Welch, in the 1970’s. And Welch was in turn the namesake for a small chestnut thoroughbred with “a white str and two hind stockings” born in Kentucky in 1972.

The same axiom applies to horse racing, as certain post positions have had more success in the Kentucky Derby than others. The most successful post position at the "Run for the Roses" has been the 5th-post position, with 10 wins to its credit, the most recent being Always Dreaming in 2017.

One trend that used to garner a lot of attention was horses that had raced in the California circuit before the Kentucky Derby were highly regarded. Since its inaugural race in 1935, the Santa Anita Derby (G1) has produced 17 Kentucky Derby winners.

With the Kentucky Derby being almost exclusively an American tradition, it comes as no surprise that foreign horses have not fared well in Churchill Downs. In the 149 previous "Run for the Roses", only five foreign horses crossed the finish line first: Omar Khayyam (1917-England), Tomy Lee (1959-England), Northern Dancer (1964-Canada), Canonero II (1971-Venezuela), and Sunny's Halo (1983-Canada). Northern Dancer held the record for the fastest Derby until Secretariat re-wrote all of the history books in 1973.

Sometimes systems or trends involving horse racing don't focus on the winners, but rather on the horses that will not win. A fairly significant trend has been to fade whoever sits atop the leaderboard of the Kentucky Derby Prep Races. The last points leader to win the Derby was California Chrome in 2014. This year's leader, Sierra Leone, looks to change that trend.

The first thing to remember is that there isn't a "perfect" system. Trends are a great place to start your handicapping, but that shouldn't be the only work that is done.

I love losers! Crazy to say, I know, but losers make the task of picking winners that much easier. When I start to handicap big races like the Kentucky Derby, I instantly try to spot losers, so the field of possible winners is smaller. What I am left with is a much smaller pool of probable winners, which makes handicapping large field races much easier.

Because of this, chaos seemingly reigns supreme as bettors will undoubtedly remember last year's Rich Strike winning with odds of 80-1 or 2009's Mine That Bird and 2006's Giacomo, going off at 51-1 and 50-1, respectively.

This year marks the 148th running of the Kentucky Derby, held at Louisville’s Churchill Downs Racetrack. Last year’s event had limited capacity due to COVID-19, but this year the crowds should be much bigger now that the pandemic is nearing its tail end. This Saturday is the Kentucky Derby, the 148th Run for the Roses, and it’s time to make those mint juleps and fill out those betting slips and hope you don’t have to drown your sorrows. By all accounts, Zandon (3-1 odds) and Epicenter (7-2) are deserving favorites, but they are not the only two horses that are attracting attention. Because the Kentucky Derby has such a large field of 20 horses, the best horse does not always win.
