NFL Teasers Betting: Best Basic Strategy Options for Week 12
by George Monroy - 11/19/2014
Basic strategy teasers made a solid comeback during Week 11 by going a perfect 3-0 in all games that qualified. New England, Seattle and Detroit all managed to return a nice profit for those bettors that had jumped on the games. Heading into Week 12 there are two basic strategy teasers on the board, and both happen to involve the two best teams in the AFC-the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots.
Remember, basic strategy teasers are a six-point, two-team wager that moves certain spreads past the strongest NFL key numbers of three and seven and use those marks as anchors. The bet takes favorites of 7.5 to 8.5 points and lowers them by six points past the strongest NFL key number of three, and underdogs of 1.5 to 2.5 points and raises them past the second strongest key number of seven. Let's take a closer look at this week's teasers with predictions and analysis.
Detroit Lions at New England Patriots
Spread : Patriots -7.5
Six-point teaser : Patriots -1.5
New England, at the moment, looks like the best team in the AFC, if not the entire NFL. Tom Brady and the offense continue to put up points at will-they have scored over 41 in three straight games-while the defense shuts down its opponents early in the first half. The team seems to be on the opposite trajectory of the Detroit Lions, a group that has a gaudy 7-3 record but continues to struggle to win games.
Detroit could only manage to produce six points last weekend in Arizona and needed fourth-quarter comebacks in each of its last three wins in order to reach that 7-3 record. The Lions defense is elite and currently ranks first against the rush and fifth against the pass and could, on a good day, keep this matchup close. However, the Patriots are monsters at Foxboro and should be able to win this matchup by more than two points.
Miami Dolphins at Denver Broncos
Spread : Broncos -8
Six-point teaser : Broncos -2
Denver may have some actual issues on offense as evidenced by its lackluster and embarrassing performance last week against the St. Louis Rams. Peyton Manning has been forced to throw the ball over 50 times in two of his last three games because the team cannot run the football. However, I wouldn't panic about Denver just yet. The Broncos still have a solid defense. Even if Manning has to throw 50 more pass attempts, he usually finds a way to make it work.
Miami has been an excellent team this season and continues to surprise bettors with its 6-4 ATS mark. The one area where the Dolphins have struggled, however, has been as an underdog against the spread. The team is currently 2-3 ATS as an underdog and 2-2 ATS on the road. Sunday's matchup between Miami and Denver feels like a spot where bettors might begin to over think things and miss out on a solid teaser. The Broncos might not cover the original spread, but expect them to win the game and cover the teaser.
