NFL Teasers Betting: Best Basic Strategy Options for Week 5
by George Monroy - 10/1/2014
Each week Doc's Sports follows basic strategy teasers and provides analysis on which of the bets hold the most value for bettors to wager on. For Week 5 of NFL action there are three basic strategy teasers on the board, two of which involve Philadelphia and Detroit being teased down to less than three points and the Chicago Bears being teased up to over eight points. Overall the teasers have not been as strong as in previous seasons, but the wager is still showing a profit for bettors and could end up one of the more profitable bets for the season.
Let's take a closer look at Week 5's basic strategy teasers with predictions and analysis. All odds come from Bovada.
Buffalo Bills at Detroit Lions
Line : Detroit -7.5
Six-point teaser : Detroit -1.5
Detroit has been spot on all season outside of its head-scratching loss to Carolina in Week 2. The team has three double-digit wins under its belt and has been terrorizing opponents on defense, allowing only 186 yards passing and 80 running per game. The biggest reason this teaser feel like a great bet, however, is because of Buffalo's struggles more than Detroit's success.
The Bills opened the year with solid wins over Miami and Chicago but have since dropped consecutive games against San Diego and Houston. The team also announced that it would be pulling starting quarterback EJ Manuel for backup Kyle Orton on Sunday against the Lions. Expect Buffalo's struggles to continue and for Detroit to cover the teaser.
St. Louis Rams at Philadelphia Eagles
Six-point teaser : Eagles -1.5
The Eagles have been the model of inconsistency through the first four weeks of the season. The squad can't seem to compete for an entire four quarters and plays only one half of each football game. During the first three weeks, the team struggled during the first half then burst into offensive mode during the second, while last weekend against San Francisco they did the exact opposite.
In spite of Philadelphia's frustrating play, it's still one of the most talented teams in the league with an offense that is sixth in passing and averaging 30 points a game early in the year. St. Louis, on the other hand, is averaging only 18 points per game and may be on course for a horrendous year. Tease the Eagles down to 1.5 points.
Chicago Bears at Carolina Panthers
Line : Bears +2.5
Six-point teaser : Bears +8.5
Chicago and Carolina looked horrendous last Sunday. Chicago was embarrassed by Green Bay yet again, and Carolina didn't bother to show up during a 38-10 loss against Baltimore. Both squads are still 2-2, but the Panthers may be the team in trouble simply because Cam Newton's ribs may still be bothering him, and Carolina does not have any weapons for the quarterback to target even if he was playing at 100 percent.
Chicago has been one of the most inconsistent squads in the NFL since Jay Cutler became the starting quarterback. One week they play like world-beaters and the next get blown out by a struggling Packers team. Neither of these squads feels reliable, but the Bears are in the better position talent-wise. Take Chicago plus the points on the teaser.
