Odds for Every NFL Team to Make the Playoffs
by Trevor Whenham - 7/10/2014
The long, long NFL offseason is made more bearable by the collection of prop bets that can be pondered. Among the most interesting this year is at Bovada - they have set odds for each of the 32 teams to make the playoffs. As is always the case in situations like this, there are some that are more interesting than others. Here are six that stand out from the crowd and odds for every NFL team to make the playoffs are listed at the bottom:
Arizona Cardinals ("Yes": +350 "No": -500): I like the Cardinals more than these oddsmakers do. They were 10-6 last year, were very close in three losses, and were arguably the best team in the league in the second half of the season. Bruce Arians did a great job of coaching, and he and Carson Palmer were on the same wavelength. There is a lot to like here. There are some concerns, of course. Injuries and defections mean some personnel changes on defense. Their division isn't going to get any easier, either. Still, they are moving in a strong direction, and if they can maintain some of the momentum built last year then they can certainly be in the mix. The yes side here is at more than a fair price.
Chicago Bears (Yes: +180 No: -220): I'd happily take the yes side on this one as well. Coach Marc Trestman is moving into his second season with the team, and I expect them to take a big step forward as they get used to his ideas and methods. He is an exceptional coach and will have success in the NFL. After some controversy and uncertainty, Jay Cutler is unquestionably the man in charge now. Though I certainly don't call myself his biggest fan, he does have the capabilities to be a legitimate contributor in the league. He has some talent around him, and they should be able to score some points. Some of this price reflects the respect people have for the Packers, but I am not as scared of them as many seem to be. That opens up room for this team - a squad that is going to be much better than their 8-8 record of last year.
Detroit Lions (Yes: +250 No: -325): I am going heavy on NFC teams, especially the NFC North. I am bullish on the Lions. They have made a strong coaching change and have brought in a very good offensive coordinator for Stafford and company in Joe Lombardi - the longtime QB coach to Drew Brees in New Orleans. One of the highest priorities for this team has to be getting Matthew Stafford back on track and letting him realize his immense potential while avoiding the boneheaded mistakes that have become his trademark. If Lombardi can do that then this team will improve significantly. Remember, though this team was just 7-9 last year they lost their last four, so they were in contention until the final quarter. I like this price.
Kansas City Chiefs (Yes: +275 No: -350): It has become popular to disrespect this Kansas City team. They won 11 games last year, but people weren't convinced by their second half. I don't think we need to be as negative about the team as this price suggests. They didn't dominate the offseason, but they still have some very nice talent - especially on offense. Their running game should be improved, and Alex Smith should be well-positioned to have another solid year. Andy Reid is in his second year, and he should be able to make some progress with that time. The AFC is not particularly strong right now, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see both wild card teams come out of the AFC West again like last year.
Philadelphia Eagles (Yes: -115 No: -115): I didn't include this one because I have a strong opinion one way or the other. It was just interesting. While oddsmakers had a clear opinion one way or the other for every other team in the league, they were completely undecided with the Eagles. What will Chip Kelly be able to do in his second year? Is Nick Foles ready to be a star? Have the personnel changes improved the team? You can make a case for almost anything to happen when looking at this team. That's what makes them such a challenge.
San Diego Chargers (Yes: +300 No: -400): They were a playoff team last year. They looked much tougher mentally in the first year under Mike McCoy than they ever did under the hopeless Norv Turner. They had a solid offseason. Philip Rivers is a much better player than he has looked for a while. There is a lot of upside here. This is my favorite price on the board.
