Who Will Draft Johnny Manziel? NFL Odds with Predictions
by George Monroy - 4/16/2014
Former-Texas A&M quarterback and media lightening rod Johnny Manziel may be the most polarizing player in the 2014 NFL Draft class. There are groups of experts, scouts and fans that believe the quarterback can be a star in the NFL, while others believe Manziel is too small and not athletic enough to be a player of impact. The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner, however, is starting to build a head of steam as the draft approaches in a few weeks.
An impressive showing at the NFL's Pro Day catapulted Manziel up the draft board, and it has all but assured the quarterback of a Top 10 spot. The draft is not until May 8, but at this point even the Houston Texans have taken a look at the quarterback as the possible No. 1 pick. Let's take a closer look at the Manziel's draft odds with predictions and analysis. All odds come from Sportsbook.ag.
Johnny Manziel 2014 Draft Position Story Lines
Manziel is coming off a high-profile and star-making year at Texas A&M and was one of college football's must-watch prospects on a weekly basis. The big question surrounding the quarterback, however, is whether or not he can transition to the next level. As great as Manziel was during his excellent run at the collegiate level, he is a smaller-than-average quarterback whose athleticism might not translate into the NFL.
To Manziel's credit, he has done nothing but impress NFL scouts and general managers over the offseason and had one of the best Pro Days among the top quarterback prospects in the draft. "Johnny Football" produced the highest Wonderlic test score (a problem-solving aptitude test) among the top prospects during Pro Day and completed 63-of-65 passes during his workout while making a wide variety of throws that left the scouts pleasantly surprised by his skill set.
Johnny Manziel 2014 Draft Position Odds
Manziel's draft position odds are as polarizing as his persona is amongst the media. The 2012 Heisman winner is expect to go early in the first round or fall all the way to the bottom of the round. Any position from the No. 6 to the No. 19 spot is receiving +1000 to +7500 odds, while the others are receiving +350 to +750.
The odds, however, heavily depend on the order of the draft. There are certain teams that simply do not need a quarterback and will probably not waste a pick to sign a high-profile backup. For example, only three of the 15 the team's drafting from the No. 10 spot to the No. 25 spot actually need a quarterback, but three of the top five teams desperately need one.
Here is a quick look at Manziel first-round draft position odds.
No. 1 Overall: +350
N0. 2 Overall: +750
No. 3 Overall: +450
No. 4 Overall: +400
No. 5 Overall: +650
No. 6 Overall: +1200
No. 7 Overall: +1000
No. 8 Overall: +1000
No. 9 Overall: +2000
No. Overall 10: +2500
No. 20 Overall or Later: +700
Johnny Manziel 2014 Draft Position Predictions
Many teams are playing coy as to whether or not they want to draft Manziel, but the truth of the matter is that a high-profile quarterback is usually too attractive of a situation for most NFL teams to pass up-even if drafting that player is a high-risk situation. Houston has the No. 1 pick, but drafting another quarterback will not help fix its problems in the short term. They are better off taking one of the top defensive prospects.
St. Louis has the second pick in the draft and will probably continue to stick with Sam Bradford as the team's quarterback-it they didn't dropped him for Robert Griffin then there's very little chance they do it for Manziel. The most likely situation for Johnny Football is to end up with Jacksonville at the No. 3 spot or Cleveland at the No. 4 spot.
The Browns are in desperate need of a quarterback, and they are also in a rebuilding stage with a new head coach looking to make a splash. Don't expect Manziel to drop past the No. 4 spot as Cleveland drafts the quarterback early.
