NFL Playoffs Betting: Divisional-Round ATS Stats and Handicapping
by George Monroy - 1/7/2015
The NFL Playoffs are set to resume this Saturday with the final eight teams squaring off in the Divisional Round of the postseason. Every game seems to be the most intriguing matchup possible, each with built in story lines and rivalries ready to be explored. The New England Patriots, who have bad blood and recent history with the Baltimore Ravens, will play on Saturday, while two young and athletic quarterbacks will face off when Cam Newton and Russell Wilson lead the Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks, respectively, in the late game.
On Sunday fans will get a polite rivalry game when Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos face off against Manning's replacement, Andrew Luck, and the Indianapolis Colts. The biggest matchup of the week, however, may be the battle between two of the NFL's most popular franchises in the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers. Let's take a closer look at the matchups by going over a few stats and trends for each team.
ATS Stats and Trends
New England Patriots : are currently 9-7 ATS and have a 3-3 record as a home ATS favorite. New England finished the season with a 2-2 ATS record and has gone 1-3 ATS over its last four meetings with the Ravens.
Seattle Seahawks : ended the regular season with a 9-6-1 overall ATS mark and produced a solid 5-2-1 record as a home ATS favorite. Seattle finished the year by covering five of six games and has gone 3-0 ATS over the last three seasons against the Carolina.
Denver Broncos : are currently 4-4 ATS as a home favorite this season and will go into Sunday's matchup as a seven-point favorite over the Colts. The Broncos are 1-1 ATS against Indianapolis since Manning has joined the team and managed to close out the season covering two of their last three spreads.
Green Bay Packers : ended the season with a 9-6-1 ATS mark but excelled as a home favorite with a 6-1-1 record over eight games played in those situations. The Packers are also undefeated at Lambeau Field this season and have won the last three meetings against Dallas.
Dallas Cowboys : are a perfect 8-0 ATS on the road this season and went 3-0 as a road underdog as well. Dallas has covered four of their last five games, with the only ATS loss being last weekend's matchup against Detroit. The Cowboys are also on a five-game SU winning streak.
Indianapolis Colts : have only been a road underdog twice this year, and they managed to spilt those games. Indianapolis, however, is 2-5 ATS during their last seven playoff road games and has struggled against teams with an over-.500 record, posting a 1-4 ATS mark during its last five matchups over those situations.
Baltimore Ravens : posted a 3-2 mark as a road underdog and are quietly becoming the upset pick of the week. The squad has enjoyed success against Tom Brady and the Patriots over the last few seasons, going 3-1 ATS over the last four meetings while eliminating New England from the playoffs during the 2012-13 NFL season.
Carolina Panthers : are the biggest underdogs of the weekend and are receiving anywhere from 10 to 11 points depending on the sportsbook. The Panthers produced a 4-4 record as a road underdog this season, but they have not lost a game to Seattle by more than five points over the last three years.
