NFL Free Prop Predictions - Week 14
by Jay Horne - 12/11/2009
After a week off from our NFL prop selections, we are eager to get back to action heading into Week 14. The matchups each week have a lot more meaning as the playoff picture will continue to come together over the next four weeks of the regular season. Every team's destiny for the postseason can be won or lost over the next few games. We have some side action for some of those playoff scenarios as we look to finish the year strong and build some momentum going into the postseason.
Prop Bet No. 1 - Jacksonville Jaguars total points vs. Miami Dolphins
Over 23.5 (-115)
Under 23.5 (-115)
The Jaguars have been on somewhat of a roll as of late, winning four of their last five games. If the season ended right now they would capture one of the wild card sports. Jacksonville now looks to keep that momentum going against a Dolphins team that is on the rise and one that posted a big victory over the Patriots last weekend. Miami has also got the ground game rumbling behind tailback Ricky Williams, who has rushed for 411 yards over the last four games. On the other side of the ball, Jacksonville has put a lot of effort into their ground game thanks to a big year by running back Maurice Jones-Drew. Jones-Drew has rushed for 1,077 yards this year, but the Miami defensive front is playing very well. The Dolphins have only allowed one rusher to run for more than 85 yards in their last five contests and the Jaguars are not nearly as potent on offense with they do not get help from Jones-Drew. In fact, the Jaguars have only scored more than 23.5 points once in six games that Jones-Drew has not rushed for more than 85 yards. Also, Miami just cannot lose this game or their postseason hopes will be over. Look for the Miami defense to shut down the Jaguars offense and build even more momentum heading into week 15.
Pick - Under 23.5
Prop Bet No. 2 - Will there be a score in the first 6 ½ minutes of the game? San Francisco 49ers vs. Arizona Cardinals
Yes (-140)
No (+110)
The 49ers and Cardinals square off in another big game with division title possibilities on the line. If San Francisco is beaten, they will be out of the playoffs while Arizona just needs one more win to clinch the division. The Cardinals defense had a very impressive performance last week, holding a previously red-hot Vikings offense to just 315 total yards. The 49ers defense has had some impressive showings of late as well, allowing just 14.75 points per game over the last four outings. Despite both team's ability to score points quickly, Arizona has failed to score within the first seven minutes of the game for four consecutive games. Also, the 49ers have yet to score within the first seven minutes of any of their division matchups this season. Considering how much is at stake for both teams, do not expect many explosive plays. Throw in the fact that both defenses are playing well and the possibility for some bad weather to capture an easy win here.
Pick - No
Prop Bet No. 3 - Total points Philadelphia Eagles vs. New York Giants
Over 22 (-125)
Under 22 (-105)
The Philadelphia Eagles blew out the Giants earlier this year in a 40-17 rout. The Eagles and Giants will find themselves on the field again this Sunday with playoff hopes on the line. Normally, the second meeting each year between these division foes is the lower-scoring game based on the colder temperatures and stronger defensive play. However, the Eagles are very likely to be in for another big day and here is why. The Giants secondary still is very vulnerable despite a big win against the Cowboys last week -- they still gave up 392 passing yards through the air. The Giants pass defense has also given up 301 yards on average over the past three games.
The Eagles offense has also been playing fairly well and has not been held under 22 points in four straight games. During that four-game stretch, QB Donovan McNabb has averaged 298 yards through the air not to mention tossing three touchdowns in the earlier meeting this season. Also, the Giants win over the Cowboys was not as impressive as some might find. Eli Manning was a miserable 11-of-25, which is eerily similar to the way he was throwing the ball the last meeting against the Eagles where he tossed two interceptions that helped the Eagles run away with the victory. The Giants defense will continue to have problems this week and I do not believe the offense will be much of a help either. Eagles have the NFC East in their sights now and they score another convincing win.
