Basic Strategy Teasers: Best Options for Week 7
by George Monroy - 10/16/2013
Basic Strategy teasers continue to be one of the best bets in the NFL this season. The two-team, six-point teasers are currently winning at a 77 percent rate through six weeks and 35 games of football. The teasers are a very specific wager that includes only favorites of -7.5 to -8.5 points and underdog of +1.5 to +2.5 points. The wager takes advantage of NFL key numbers and the strength of three- and seven-point margin of victories. Last week basic strategy teasers went 5-1 and are 27-8 on the season.
For Week 7 of NFL action, there are five teasers to choose from, the majority of which involved giving six points to small underdogs and pushing those spreads past the seven-point mark. In the NFL the most common margin of victories are three and seven points, and any time a bettor can base his wagers around those numbers then his chances of winning are greatly improved. Let’s take a look at the best basic strategy teasers for this week of NFL football. Odds come from the Doc’s Sports affiliated sportsbooks.
Houston Texans at Kansas City Chiefs
Original spread: Chiefs -7.5
Six-point teaser: Chiefs -1.5
Texans quarterback Matt Schaub has been listed as “questionable” for this week’s road matchup against the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs. Schaub suffered a leg injury during last Sunday’s disappointing loss to the St. Louis Rams, and even if the quarterback does manage to play, he might be even more ineffective than usual. The Chiefs are 5-1 against the spread and are probably a favorite to cover the original spread of 7.5 points. The Texans, on the other hand, have not covered a spread all season and currently have a 0-6 ATS record. Teasing the Chiefs down to 1.5 points is the best teaser of the weekend.
Chicago Bears at Washington Redskins
Original spread: Bears +1.5
Six-point teaser: Beats +7.5
The Washington Redskins might be the biggest disappointment in the league this season. Robert Griffin and company were expected to improve on last year’s impressive 10-6 season and be at least a playoff contender. However, the team has been largely ineffective through five games and cannot get Griffin into the offensive groove that he enjoyed last year. Washington has problems on both sides of the ball, and they will have a difficult time beating the Bears on Sunday, let alone doing it by more than seven points. Taking Chicago, who is tied for first place in a tough NFC North, on the teaser is also another strong bet to make this week.
Baltimore Raves at Pittsburgh Steelers
Original spread: Ravens +2.5
Six-point teaser: Ravens +8.5
The Ravens have not been a powerhouse team to start the year, and they are a very average 3-3 through six games. However, taking the Ravens plus the 8.5 points over a hapless Pittsburgh team feels like another great teaser bet to make. Baltimore has not been great on the road, but they have only lost by an average of 5.2 points and should be able to cover the spread, if not win the game straight up. This is another very solid teaser.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Atlanta Falcons
Original spread: Falcons -7.5
Six-point teaser: Falcons -1.5
The Atlanta Falcons have been bad this season and are a shocking 1-4 to start the year. Lucky for the team that they will be facing and even worse Tampa Bay Buccaneers squad that has still not won a game this year. Tampa Bay has lost by an average of seven points per game and was blown out last week by a 3-3 Philadelphia Eagles team. This teaser is not as strong as the Bears and Chiefs wagers, but there is still excellent value in betting on the Falcons to add a much-needed win to their record.
Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles
Original spread: Cowboys +2.5
Six-point teaser: Cowboys +8.5
The Cowboys and Eagles will play a huge divisional game this week with first place in the NFC East on the line. Neither team has been playing particularly well to start the season, but the Eagles are on a two-game winning streak and seem to be getting better on offense. The Cowboys are surprisingly the best ATS team in the league with a 5-1 record and have covered their spreads by an average of 4.7 points. The Eagles, on the other hand, have a 3-3 ATS record. On paper Dallas is the better team in this matchup, and could easily win the game outright. But then again, the Cowboys always play their worst when the pressure is on. Taking Dallas plus the points feels like another great teaser to be a part of, but if any basic strategy teaser team was not going to cover this week, it would probably be the Cowboys.
Last Week: 5-1; Season: 27-8
