NFL Basic Strategy Teasers: Best Options for Week 5
by George Monroy - 10/1/2013
Wagering on basic strategy teasers has been a fairly straightforward affair through the first five weeks of a still very young NFL season. The teasers have been winning at a 72 percent rate, and that number is probably even higher for those bettors that have played them with caution and are only wagering on the strongest of the bunch. A basic strategy teaser is a two-team combination wager that takes advantage of two of the strongest NFL key numbers of three and seven.
This week there are seven teasers to choose from—most of which involve giving the extra points to the underdog and moving its spread past the seven-point mark. Let’s take a closer look at Week 5 teasers and go over the best options to choose from.
New England Patriots at Cincinnati Bengals
Original spread: Patriots +1.5
Six-point teaser: Patriots +7.5
This is the second week in a row that bettors have been able to get the Patriots at over seven points on a teaser. The oddsmakers may be off of the New England bandwagon because of the myriad of injuries and outside drama surrounding the team. The Patriots, however, have continued to stay focused behind the leadership of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. This week’s matchup is a game that New England can win outright, especially because the Bengals have struggled on offense over the last few weeks. The Patriots plus the 7.5 points is the strongest teaser of the week.
Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers
Original spread: Packers -7.5
Six-point teaser: Packers -1.5
This a huge division game for the Packers, and as absurd as it may sound only five weeks into the season, this is probably a must-win for the team. If Green Bay were to lose they would trail both the Lions and Bears by nearly three games with a third of the season gone. The Packers have not looked great this year, and they might not be able to cover the original spread against a very good Detroit team. However, they should be able to win this game. The one take away here is that Green Bay is desperate and might play this game like their season depends on it.
Kansas City Chiefs at Tennessee Titans
Original spread: Titans +2.5
Six-point teaser: Titans +8.5
Both of these teams have been a pleasant surprise over the first four weeks of NFL football. The surprising aspect of this game is that a Chiefs versus Titans matchup features two of the better teams in the league. Kansas City has played like a legitimate playoff team and could easily win this game. The trouble is expecting the Chiefs to win by more than 8.5 points on the road. Tennessee plus the points is a very solid wager to make. The Titans are a better team than most fans and experts give them credit for.
Denver Broncos at Dallas Cowboys
Original spread: Broncos -8
Six-point teaser: Broncos -2
It seems strange putting the powerhouse Denver Broncos this low on the teaser list. The team has destroyed every opponent it has faced this season and simply looks terrifying. However, as bettors, our No. 1 job is to not get caught up in the hype. The Broncos will be going on the road to face a decent Cowboys team that is currently 2-0 at home. There is no doubt that Denver is the better and more talented team and will probably end up adding another blowout win to its resume. However, there would be no shame in losing to the Cowboys on the road. Denver may be great, but let’s not forget that they are playing against other professional teams.
Seattle Seahawks at Indianapolis Colts
Original spread: Colts +2.5
Six-point teaser: Colts +8.5
The Colts are legitimate playoff and even Super Bowl contender in the AFC, and under normal circumstances getting them plus 8.5 points at home would be a steal. However, they are playing a very scary Seattle Seahawks team that just might be the best in the league. The Colts are probably in a good position to cover this teaser, but the Seahawks have been so dominant as of late that it would not be surprising at all to see them blow out the Colts. This is one of those wagers that it is probably better to stay away from.
Carolina Panthers at Arizona Cardinals
Original spread: Cardinals +2
Six-point teaser: Cardinals +8
The Panthers are in no position to be a road favorite over anyone other than the Jacksonville Jaguars. The oddsmakers might be overvaluing the team and are probably expecting too much of quarterback Cam Newton. The Panthers are currently 1-2 against the spread, while the Cardinals are a very good 3-1. Take the Cardinals plus the eight points.
Philadelphia Eagles at New York Giants
Original spread: Eagles +2.5
Six-point teaser: Eagles +8.5
This is a horrible matchup between two inconsistent and unreliable teams. At first glance the Eagles plus the points feels like a solid wager, especially since the Giants have been very bad this season. But bettors should remember that this is the Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants could be trailing by 20 points at halftime and still win this game. The Eagles will probably cover the spread, but this game is just too unpredictable to wager on.
