Basic Strategy Teasers: Best Week 5 NFL Betting Options
If the NFL didn't already have a million recognizable sponsors in place, I would think that the league was sponsored by some company called "Points" and the motto would be something like "defense optional".
Through Week 4 of the NFL season, teams have combined to score the most points in NFL history (3,030), breaking the mark set in 2012 of 2,986. There have also been 344 touchdowns throughout the first four weeks, breaking the old NFL mark of 315 set in 2015. And lastly, teams have thrown a combined 228 passing touchdowns, which is 23 more than the previous mark of 205, set back in 2013.
To say the NFL has become a pass-happy league that caters to the offensive stars would be the biggest understatement of the year. Teams are essentially getting what they want on offense at will - with the exception of the terrible offensive coordinators… I'm looking at you, Randy Fichtner.
If you were to tell me that the Pittsburgh Steelers would be held to 14 total points, including zero in the second half at home, and be the fourth-lowest scoring team of the week, I would have told you that you were nuts. But here we are. In a league that has seen points scored at a break-neck pace, the Steelers, of all teams, find themselves in last place in the AFC North. But that's a discussion for another day.
As for last week's Basic Strategy Teaser, we were able to pull off the victory thanks to the Texans getting the job done and covering the +7.5 adjusted spread and the Jaguars getting a much-needed victory.
Remember, a Basic Strategy Teaser is a two-team wagering options that allows you to adjust the spread six, six-and-a-half or seven points to get a favorable spread. At Doc's Sports, we only recommend using six-point teasers and moving spreads through key numbers such as three and seven. The NFL is a weekly league. From one week to another, teams will look like Super Bowl contenders and then they will look like they are destined for a lottery pick. The Lions are one of those teams who have been up and down over the course of the first four games. In this spot however, we expect the Lions to come out against a division rival at home and stay within the teased line.
We saw how good the Lions can be when they are on their game. They completely dominated the New England Patriots at home two weeks ago. The run game got going thanks to Kerryon Johnson, and the passing game looked smooth and efficient. Matthew Stafford looked poise in the pocket and made the right reads and decisions. Now, the Lions are going up against a Packers team who hasn't shown much of anything lately. Aside from the heroics of Aaron Rodgers in the season opener, the Packers have tied the Vikings, lost to the Redskins and beat the Bills. They are very close to being a one-win team. One has to wonder how healthy Rodgers is, and it'll be on the Lions to get enough pressure on him to really find out. Catching only a point-and-a-half isn't a scenario I'd prefer to grab, but teasing them up through the key number of seven is very appealing. Look for the Lions to play the Packers tight and keep the game close throughout and just maybe, win this game outright.
The second part of this teaser is going to rely on the high-flying Rams to get the job done on the road against Seattle. Instead of laying seven-and-a-half, we will tease them and bring them down through the key numbers of seven and three and make them one-and-a-half-point favorites. Look, the Rams are the best team in the league. They have a quarterback who is full of confidence and who has figured out how to play the position like an elite signal caller. They have the best running back in the game in Todd Gurley II and a receiving corps that is predicated on speed. Not to mention their defense, which is among the best in the league, and a head coach who has become one of the most likeable guys in the league. Going on the road and laying more than a touchdown in a division game is a bad spot, but the Rams are talented enough to just get the win… and that's all we need them to do. The Seahawks defense just lost their best player in Earl Thomas, and the offense has been pathetic in each of the four games they've played in. Russell Wilson will be running for his life and will have no time to make plays, which is why we think the Rams can keep their undefeated record intact.
