2012 NFL Power Rankings – Week 17
 by Robert Ferringo - 12/26/2012
Let’s keep this short and sweet, shall we? This is the end. All 32 teams started this season with so much hope and promise, but for 20 of those teams the season is going to end in a fiery wreck of defeat and disdain. The other 12 will move onto The Second Season, where glory and riches await the winners and shame and regret cloak the losers.

Positioning. The last two weeks of the NFL season are all about positioning. The teams still in the playoff race are motivated by postseason positioning right now, jostling for bye weeks and home games. For several teams, next week will be a glorified scrimmage, so that means that Week 16 will be the last hurrah for a lot of clubs that want to get their positioning sewn up before Christmas.
2012 NFL Power Rankings – Week 15
 by Robert Ferringo - 12/11/2012
This week has the chance to be one of the most entertaining and unpredictable weekends of the season. With six games featuring teams with winning records and host of teams still alive to make the playoffs (10 of the 16 teams in the NFC are still very much alive), we should see a very high level of football played on Sunday as the fighting and clawing for postseason positioning continues throughout the league.

Maxing out and mailing it in. That is the theme for December football. Each team in the NFL has its own motivation heading into the final month of the league’s grueling 17-week regular season campaign. For teams in the top-tier it is all about playoff positioning and trying to secure bye weeks and home games. For teams in the second-tier it is all about just making it to the postseason and securing a spot in do-or-die January.
2012 NFL Power Rankings – Week 13
 by Robert Ferringo - 11/27/2012
An underrated story of the last two football seasons is that we have had, nationally, back-to-back years with mild, extended falls. The weather has had little to no impact on late-season football over the last two seasons and that has helped pass-wacky favorites continue to cover big spreads deep into December.

OK, so it’s a huge week for gamblers the world over, and from Maine to Maui there is wall-to-wall betting action this week. So I’m going to keep this one short and sweet. Here are Doc’s Sports Week 12 NFL power rankings:
2012 NFL Power Rankings – Week 11
 by Robert Ferringo - 11/14/2012
It was another strong week for the betting public last week, as the most heavily bet favorites on the board – Indianapolis, Denver, Tampa Bay and Dallas – came through again. That now makes back-to-back profitable weeks for the bettors…but anyone that has been around NFL betting for any length of time knows that it is a matter of “when” and not “if” the books are going to turn the tables and get it back.
2012 NFL Power Rankings – Week 10
 by Robert Ferringo - 11/6/2012
We’re going to do things a little different with the NFL power rankings this week. In honor of Election Day and this amazing country of ours, we’re going to pair each NFL team with a former president. Just so I’m clear: I am not trying to rank the presidents. Not at all. I am just trying to pair each current incantation of each NFL team with its presidential doppelganger.
2012 NFL Power Rankings – Week 9
 by Robert Ferringo - 10/30/2012
There are a lot of seemingly juicy lines on this week’s NFL board. And Week 9 appears likely to be, in terms of betting action, one of the most lopsided of the season. As of Wednesday, Denver (88 percent), Baltimore (91 percent), Detroit (83), Chicago (83), and Tampa Bay (82) were all taking the overwhelming majority of public bets. Houston (78 percent) and Green Bay (75) were not far behind.
2012 NFL Power Rankings – Week 8
 by Robert Ferringo - 10/23/2012
The Yo-Yo Effect was in full effect last week in the NFL. Two weeks ago underdogs dominated public bettors while going 11-3 against the spread and posting eight outright winners. Well, with the public now looking hard at the puppies, the favorites came back and went 7-4 on Sunday, with several of the squarest bets on the board (Dallas, Indianapolis, Green Bay) coming through for Joe Public.
2012 NFL Power Rankings – Week 7
 by Robert Ferringo - 10/16/2012
Underdogs were all the rage last week, going 11-3 ATS and posting eight outright winners. That is a victory for parity – and for the sportsbooks – and we’ll see this week if that is a trend that is going to continue or if the bettors are going to get yo-yoed this week, with the favorites evening things out on Sunday.
2012 NFL Power Rankings – Week 6
 by Robert Ferringo - 10/9/2012
Bye weeks are becoming more prevalent, and over the next six weeks it will become even more difficult for bettors to get an edge on the sportsbooks. Fewer games means fewer opportunities to exploit weak spots, and that means that the books will continue to hold a big edge over the players through one of the most difficult times on the sports betting calendar.
2012 NFL Power Rankings – Week 5
 by Robert Ferringo - 10/2/2012
The first quarter of the season is finished, and the momentum is building for a lot of teams that have come out of the gate fast. Clubs like Minnesota, Philadelphia and Arizona are riding the wave of their clutch September. But the oddsmakers are taking note, and now those teams are going to have to continue to perform as expectations rise.
2012 NFL Power Rankings – Week 3
 by Robert Ferringo - 9/18/2012
It was a better week for first- and second-year starters at quarterback, with the young signal callers going 3-3 against the spread when matched up against a veteran quarterback. However, that was not a profitable week and over the first two weeks these young bucks have gone 5-9 ATS when facing a quarterback with three or more years of experience.
2012 NFL Power Rankings – Week 2
 by Robert Ferringo - 9/11/2012
I have a long-standing theory that rookies and freshmen suck. I understand this theory is at odds with the national obsession with potential, but in my experience no players are more overrated and no one’s impact is more overstated than a rookie or a freshman.
2012 NFL Power Rankings – Week 1
 by Robert Ferringo - 9/4/2012
I’ve been staring at these NFL Week 1 odds for over two months. I’ve been analyzing every matchup, every permutation, and every angle of these games as I desperately waited for the 2012 NFL season to begin. And now it is here. Week 1 in the NFL is finally here after another excruciating offseason, and we are about to begin another six-month battle march towards Super Bowl XLVII.
2012 NFL Power Rankings – Preseason Edition
 by Robert Ferringo - 7/25/2012
Thanks to the 2011 NFL Lockout, last year my initial NFL power rankings weren’t posted until after the first exhibition game. Those rankings were still somewhat of a half-blind stab, considering that the truncated offseason really didn’t give us any indication on how each NFL team would be constituted. But as it turned out, my first impressions and initial feelings about the teams were pretty prescient and were a useful guide for another successful football season.
2011 NFL Power Rankings – Week 17
 by Robert Ferringo - 12/27/2011
Betting on Week 17 of the regular season in the NFL is a bit like betting on Week 4 of the NFL Preseason. In both instances it is nearly impossible to gauge motivation in a majority of the games featuring teams that are only playing for pride. And in the other games, the ones that actually do have playoff implications, the NFL lines are usually jacked up well beyond what the spreads should be in order to ambush the square public action.
2011 NFL Power Rankings – Week 15
 by Robert Ferringo - 12/14/2011
With college basketball, college football bowl games, NBA preseason prep work, NHL betting, and an assortment of other holiday season rites of passage, right now is the one of the most frantic, stressful, emotionally draining, and important time on the sports betting calendar.
2011 NFL Power Rankings - Week 14
 by Robert Ferringo - 12/6/2011
Over the final few weeks of the NFL you are going to hear people talk about “must-win games”. Just remember: must-win games are games for teams that weren’t good enough to take care of their business when they should have and are now looking to pull some 11th hour rabbit out of their hat and find their way into the NFL playoffs.
