NFL Office Pool Picks Week 9
Week 9 is always a milestone week in my eyes. After this week every team in the league has played at least half of their season. For some teams that means that it is downhill until the merciful end of the season. They are over the top of the hill and the finish line is finally in sight. For others, though, things are just getting serious and they ramp up their play as the playoffs draw nearer. In theory, then, the second half is often easier to pick than the first half was for NFL office pool players. Let's hope that that is the case this year, because there have been some rough weeks this year. Here are the straight up picks for this week's NFL action.
Buffalo at New York Jets: The Bills are 5-2. I can't believe I am even writing that - especially because they are not particularly statistically impressive on either side of the ball. The Jets have remembered that they are the Jets, though, losing three straight. Buffalo has already beaten the Jets once, and they will do so again. Take the Bills.
Indianapolis at Houston: Honestly - do I have to say anything? Houston was as impressive in a loss as you can be last week. Indianapolis is indescribably lousy. Total mismatch - take the Texans.
Cincinnati at Jacksonville: The Bengals are just a lousy team. They have only three wins, and two come against Cleveland and Indy so they hardly count. They are just playing out the string until Marvin Lewis gets fired. Actually, that may never happen - he has lasted this long, so he may last forever. Jacksonville has their faults, but their biggest strength here is that they aren't the Bengals. Take the Jaguars.
Tampa Bay at New Orleans: I thought Tampa Bay was going to be really good coming into the season. I really nailed that pick. They are just awful and look to have given up on themselves. It could get really ugly - even uglier than it is now. It feels like New Orleans is overachieving by a pretty wide margin, but they are clearly the better team right now. Take the Saints.
L.A. Rams at New York Giants: The Giants are a total mess, and it feels like a bye week won't have helped them solve any of their issues. Heck, I'm not even sure that an extra week would be long enough to write down everything that is wrong with them. L.A. has looked very good in their last two wins, and they are coming off a bye as well. Take the Rams.
Atlanta at Carolina: Both of these teams were struggling a bit, and both got back on track with a win last week. I don't like either of the teams long term this year, so it's tough to get up for this game. Carolina is at home, and that's enough to give them the nod. Take the Panthers.
Denver at Philadelphia: Denver has an elite defense. Their issue is that their offense basically doesn't exist right now. Philadelphia is the best team in football right now. That might not last, but it should be able to continue for at least another week. Take the Eagles.
Baltimore at Tennessee: Well, that was odd last week. Baltimore pitched a shutout and won by 40 last week, and yet it's tough to give them too much credit because Miami was so very bad. Tennessee won two straight before their bye last week and are figuring a few things out. They aren't great yet, but they should be better here. Take the Titans.
Arizona at San Francisco: What a hideous game. Arizona has lost two of three, and those losses were by an average of 30 points. San Francisco hasn't won in eight tries, and their last two have been by an average of 26.5. Neither team deserves a win. San Francisco isn't playing bad enough to go winless, though, so they have to win at some point. It could be now. Take the Niners.
Washington at Seattle: The Redskins are a decent team. Their issue, though, is that they aren't quite good enough at anything to be a good team. Seattle is coming off the most exciting win any team has had all year, and their four straight wins show they were dealing with some really concerning early issues. I don't think they are a great team, but they are the better one here at home. Take the Seahawks.
Kansas City at Dallas: The Chiefs have taken two big punches and are lying on the canvas. Will they pick themselves up and get back in the fight, or is this their new reality? I'm a believer in them, and I am not at all convinced by these Cowboys. Take the Chiefs.
Oakland at Miami: Miami just lost by 40 points. And they were flattered by being that close. The Raiders have plenty of issues right now, but it just doesn't matter. Take the Raiders.
Detroit at Green Bay: Detroit can't get out of their own way. In other words they are the Lions. And they have lost three in a row. This should fix that, though. Green Bay has had a bye week, but it won't be enough to turn Brett Hundley into a real QB. Take the Lions.
