NFL Office Pool Picks Week 4
Maybe the thing that the NFL is best at is keeping us humble. Weeks like last week - and this whole season, really - are just a reminder that we don't know anything. We might briefly think we do, and for a while it might seem like we are right. However, the second you are confident you have the NFL figured out is the second you become a total fool. And with that uplifting thought planted in our brains, let's see if we can make sense of this week's action for our office pools. Last week actually went alright all things considered, and this week we are going to build on that and have an even better week. Maybe. Hopefully.
Minnesota at L.A. Rams: The Vikings are in trouble right now. The talent is there, obviously, but something is broken. It wasn't that they got blown out by the Bills. It was that they didn't really seem to care, and they did very little to adjust and adapt after the half. If they knew they were beat against the worst team in the league. So how do you think it will go against the best? Given how this season has gone, the Vikings will probably win by 40, but the Rams are the right pick.
Houston at Indianapolis: This game is like punishment for past transgressions - watching it would be that much of a punishment. I don't like a whole lot about either team right now, but if pressed I guess I like fewer things about Indianapolis. Take the Texans.
Detroit at Dallas: This game makes the last one look like a classic. Dallas is hurt and ineffective - a bad combo. Detroit isn't much better in a lot of ways, but they will be riding high after humbling the Patriots last week. Take the Lions.
Buffalo at Green Bay: Who knows how to deal with this one? Green Bay is supposed to be one of the elite teams, but they just rolled over against a perfectly mediocre Washington team. They have issues. And Buffalo is the worst team in the league, yet they just crushed one of the better teams in the league with a rookie QB making his first start. This game isn't being played in Wisconsin, but rather Bizarro Land. Take the Packers. I guess.
Tampa Bay at Chicago: Fitzmagic only came around for the second half last time around, but it still showed up. Now it faces a very strong defense but a very incompetent offense. Tough game. I'll take the home team, but I won't feel good about it. Take the Bears.
New York Jets at Jacksonville: I am willing to give Jacksonville a mulligan in their loss to the Titans, but it is the only one they are getting from me this year. Their defense was still excellent, and they will give young Sam Darnold fits. And Jacksonville's offense surely can't be that bad two weeks in a row - not against this New York defense. Take the Jaguars.
Miami at New England: Miami is unbeaten but hasn't beaten anyone. New England has lost twice and has beaten themselves both times. One team is damaged, and one team isn't very good. Fun game. Again, home field has to be the difference. Take the Patriots.
Cincinnati at Atlanta: These are two teams I often pick against just because I don't trust them - and it often goes well for me. But when they play each other I have issues. Luckily, while I don't trust Atlanta's mental game at all, they are the far more talented and better coached team - except for Steve Sarkisian, who is a complete waste of flesh. Take the Falcons.
Philadelphia at Tennessee: The Eagles haven't looked like the Eagles much this year. But the Titans have only rarely looked like an NFL team. Their defense needs to be respected, but Philadelphia has too many tools and should be the winner here. Take the Eagles.
Seattle at Arizona: One team is on a fairly rapid trip to the bottom, and the other one has been there long enough already to be settled in and comfortable. Arizona is one of the two or three worst teams in the league, but Seattle has all sorts of issues. Coin flip came up tails, so take the Seahawks.
Cleveland at Oakland: The Jon Gruden circus is not going exactly as planned. What a total mess. Cleveland got an emotional win, but they have been playing well all year, and Baker Mayfield has serious moxie. What the heck - take the Browns.
New Orleans at New York Giants: The Giants got a nice win last week, but they are going to struggle to string a lot of those together this year - especially against a decent team like this one. New Orleans has struggled a bit compared to expectations, but he fundamentals are in place. Take the Saints.
San Francisco at L.A. Chargers: C.J. Beathard is starting for the Niners. There is no reason to believe that C.J. Beathard is a viable NFL quarterback. The list of guys that team is reportedly looking at to sign as a backup for Beathard make the starter look like Johnny Unitas. The Chargers have been reasonably disappointing, but their two losses have come against very good teams - Kansas City and the Rams. C.J. Beathard is barely even playing the same sports as Patrick Mahomes and Jared Goff. Take the Chargers.
Baltimore at Pittsburgh: The Steelers got a key win on Monday night, but they didn't score in the second half, they tried their hardest to give the game away, they got help from the officials to score what was ultimately the winning points, they seemingly got a penalty on every snap, and Ben Roethlisberger looked like he was struggling to figure out which teammate to murder first down the stretch. This is not a healthy team. Baltimore is flawed, though, and Pittsburgh is at home. I'll take the Steelers, but it makes me uneasy.
Kansas City at Denver: Denver's defense is sound, but it isn't a video game defense, so it will be tough for it to keep up with the video game offense that Kansas City employs. Kansas City will show a hint of mortality at some point, but I can't bet that it will be now. Take the Chiefs.
