In the NFL, betting teams against the spread or ATS is the most popular way to bet on football games. A spread is a sportsbook's way of leveling the playing field when two teams hook up and one team is noticeably better than the other one. For each game played, you would see a line that looks like this: New England -7 over New York Jets. That means that the sportsbooks think the Patriots are seven points better than the Jets and as such should win by seven or more points.
