Basic Strategy NFL Teasers: Best Betting Options for Week 16
by George Monroy - 12/20/2013
With only two weeks left in the NFL season, most teams are still jockeying for playoff position. Teams like the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers are chasing after division leads, while others, like the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots, have their divisions locked up and are only concerned about seeding. For bettors, the only worry is trying to find as many solid gambling opportunities as possible before the regular season ends.
Basic strategy teasers have been one of the most reliable NFL betting options all year. The wager has won at an 80 percent rate this season, and it is one of the easiest bets to make as well. The teaser is a simple two-team, six-point wager that allows bettors to either add or subtract six points to certain games. Basic strategy teaser games include matchups with spreads of -7 to -8.5 points and underdogs of +1.5 to 2.5 points. Let’s take a closer look at this week’s teaser options and figure out which have the best value to wager on.
Miami Dolphins at Buffalo Bills
Original spread: Bills +2.5
Six-point teaser: Bills +8.5
The Buffalo Bills have long been out of the playoff race, but they would love to ruin the postseason chances of a division rival. Miami is 8-6 and tied for the final wild-card spot in the AFC with the Baltimore Ravens. They desperately need a win on Sunday. These late-season games usually give the underdog another reason to play hard as those teams do not want to be the stepping stone for potential playoff squads. The Bills are 5-1 ATS as a home underdog this season, and they should be able to find enough motivation to cover one more spread this year.
Dallas Cowboys at Washington Redskins
Original spread: Redskins +2.5
Six-point teaser: Redskins +8.5
Just when you think that the Dallas Cowboys are turning the corner and finally beginning to play up to their talent level, they inexplicable implode by giving up a huge second-half lead—it happens every season. There is no reason to trust that the Cowboys can beat the dysfunctional Redskins by more than eight points. Dallas is 0-1 as a road favorite this season and may have more trouble in store this Sunday against Washington. Take the Redskins plus the points.
Cleveland Browns at New York Jets
Original spread: Browns +2
Six-point teaser: Browns +8
The Jets have been all over the map this season, but they are coming off a 10-point win over the Oakland Raiders during their last home game in Week 14. Both these teams are bad and have nothing to really play for, so it would not be surprising to see either team get blown out on Sunday. Cleveland has lost four games in a row, but the last three have been by seven points or less. Taking the Browns plus the points is a solid wager to make, but if a bettor felt compelled to skip this teaser matchup, I would not be able to disagree.
