2014 Record: 9-7
2015 Las Vegas Season Win Total: 8.5
The Houston Texans had one of the quietest nine-win seasons in the NFL last season. Now second-year coach Bill O'Brien is trying to take the next step and vault the Texans to the level of legitimate contender to Indianapolis' chokehold on the AFC South crown.
The Texans have the foundation of a very good football team. Their offensive line is stable, experienced and solid. Their defensive front seven is among the best in football. But Houston's problems are at the skill positions and in the passing game, on offense and defense.
The main question for this team is who will be the starting quarterback? That's never a good question to have going into the season. And it's even worse when the two options are Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett, two guys that would have to play out of their minds to be mediocre. That said, I think Hoyer should have the upper hand. He has more experience as a starter, and when he wasn't getting injured he was actually decent for the pathetic Browns, going 10-6 straight up and 11-5 against the spread the past two seasons.
Hoyer won't have a lot to work with on offense. Arian Foster is hurt (again) and receiver DeAndre Hopkins, while talented, is held back by his inflated ego. It will be up to O'Brien to work his magic on that side of the ball.
Houston starts the year under the glare of HBO's "Hard Knocks" series, meaning that people across the country are going to be focused on this group. Are they ready for their close-up? I think so. I think Houston's biggest edge this year is the fact that they A) play in the worst division in football and B) they crossover with the NFC South, the second-worst division in the game.
I would take a stab with the Texans going 'over' the total. I think their quarterbacks can be OK. And that should be good enough for a team that is just a little better than OK in a lot of other spots. (Oh, and they have J.J. Watt, who is a goddamn animal. And that always helps.)
