2014 Record: 11-5
2015 Season Win Total: 8.5
Based purely on the preseason odds, the Steelers appear to be one of the top teams in the NFL and a "sleeper" team to win a banner or two. They are currently No. 9 in terms of odds to win the Super Bowl and tied for fourth in their odds to win the AFC. The Steelers won 11 games last season and boast one of the best offenses in the league. What's not to like?
Well, I don't like Pittsburgh this year. And I know I'm in the minority.
The Steelers were the beneficiaries of one of the easiest schedules in football last year. But that's not the case in 2015 as the AFC North has to crossover with the rugged NFC West and deep AFC West. Their schedule instantly goes from one of the five easiest to one of the five most difficult in the league, and that will have a huge impact.
Pittsburgh's defense is nowhere near the dominating, smothering units that have been the Steelers calling card for the past 20 years. They were No. 18 in points and yards last year, and that was playing against some pathetic offenses. I don't think the Steelers improved over the summer, either, instead watching as clubhouse leaders Troy Polamalu and Brett Keisel each moved on.
Offensively, the Steelers are in good shape. But they are a bit overreliant on three players. Granted, they are three awesome players. But Pittsburgh is in an untenable situation if they lose Big Ben, Antonio Brown or LeVeon Bell. And, in fact, they have to play the first two games without Bell due to a suspension.
The Steelers are an amazing organization. They have finished below .500 exactly one time in this century and exactly zero times since Roethlisberger has been under center. They haven't had a negative seasonal point differential in 11 years.
I wouldn't touch their season win total. But if I had to put money down I would call for the 'under'. I do not think Pittsburgh is a true contender in the AFC, and I think they will be one of the teams that made the postseason last year but miss out this season. Play 'under'.
